Garza releases 2016 fall schedule

The Fresno State softball team will host four games and play one on the road this fall
FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State softball team is back on campus and ready to begin its campaign for a third-straight Mountain West Championship. This week, Fresno State first-year head coach Linda Garza announced fall camps that will take place on Oct. 22 and, on Thursday, released the team's fall schedule.

The Bulldogs are slated to host four California Community College Athletic Association programs in an 11-day span beginning on Oct. 29 – College of the Sequoias, Sacramento City College, Reedley College and Fresno City College. The 'Dogs will also take a trip to CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 30.

All Fresno State fall home games are free and open to the public at Margie Wright Diamond and the first team practice of the year will be held on Oct. 11.

On Oct. 29, the Bulldogs will face College of the Sequoias from Visalia, Calif., at 10:30 a.m. PT. Last season, the Giants went 16-24, including 7-11 to finish fourth in Central Valley Conference play, hit .269 as a team and recorded an overall ERA of 3.50.

The 'Dogs will then travel to CSU Bakersfield on Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. to face the Roadrunners for the first time since meeting in the NCAA Regionals last season, in which Fresno State defeated Bakersfield 8-5. In the 2016 season, the Roadrunners earned an overall record of 16-34 (5-10 WAC) with a .243 batting average and 3.76 ERA.

On Nov. 5, Fresno State will host a doubleheader with Sacramento City College scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and Reedley College for 5 p.m.

Last season, the Panthers took first place in the Big 8 Conference with a 17-4 record and finished second in the state (36-10-1 overall), while hitting .313 and earning a 1.66 ERA. The Tigers came out of the 2016 season with a 23-17 record (13-5 CVC, third place), .267 batting average and 2.79 ERA.

To wrap up the fall schedule, the Bulldogs will host Fresno City College on Nov. 8 at 5:15 p.m. The Rams finished last season with a trip to the Super Regionals, falling to Sacramento City 2-0 in their final game. Fresno City had completed CVC play with a perfect 18-0 record (39-7 overall), a .378 team batting average and 2.31 ERA.

The upcoming 2017 spring home schedule is highlighted by the annual Fresno State Classic (Feb. 24-26) and Wright Invitational (March 10-12). Mountain West play is scheduled for the 'Dogs to begin on the road at San Diego State on March 17 and their MW home opener is set for March 24 against Boise State.

Fresno State bid farewell to eight seniors at the conclusion of the 2016 season, but looks to return nine upperclassmen, including four seniors.

The Bulldogs return the 2016 MW Player of the Year, Kierra Willis, two first-team All-MW selections (Kierra Willis, Lindsey Willmon) and one second-team All-MW (Malia Rivers) selection.
