FRESNO, Calif. – Junior Dominique Jackson was 3-for-3 with a home run, a double, and 5 RBIs and was one of six Bulldogs to tally multiple hits in a 10-4 victory over Monmouth to conclude the Fresno State Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Fresno State (13-11) recorded a season-high 14 hits, scoring in five of the six innings in which it hit with three multi-run innings. Hayleigh Galvan also had three hits while Katie Castellon, Savannah McHellon, Vanessa Hernandez, and Schuylar Broussard all had two-hit games. Jackson and Hernandez both reached base in all four of their plate appearances.
Â
Playing its second game of the day and sixth game in the three-day tournament, Monmouth (6-8) got into the Fresno State bullpen in the third inning but sophomore Samantha Mejia had a strong pitching performance in relief, throwing the last 4.2 innings of the game and allowing just four hits and two runs to pick up her first win of the season.
Â
How it Happened
The Bulldogs put two runs on the board before an out was recorded in the bottom of the first as Miranda Rohleder and Castellon both walked and both stole a base before McHellon drove them both in with a single. Monmouth got a run in the top of the second on a double followed by an RBI single by pitcher Amanda Riley, but the 'Dogs got the run back in the bottom of the second on an RBI double from Castellon.
Â
In the top of the third Monmouth had its leadoff hitter reach on a hit-by-pitch ahead of an RBI double from Katie Baron. Mejia then entered and got the last two outs to strand the potential tying run at second. Galvan singled and Hernandez walked in the bottom of the third before Jackson had a 12-pitch battle with Riley that ended with a 3-run home run to right center, giving the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead.
Â
Mejia retired the first six batters she faced, and in the bottom of the fourth the 'Dogs added a run as McHellon doubled and Galvan drove in pinch runner Aaliyah Cuevas with a single to center. In the top of the fifth Baron struck again with a 2-run homer to center to cut the Fresno State lead to 7-4.
Â
The Bulldogs sent seven to the plate in the bottom of the sixth to tack on three insurance runs off a sacrifice fly from Chase LeeHong and a two-run double from Jackson, giving Mejia more than enough run support to complete the win.

Quotable
- Head Coach Linda Garza
"It's a great opportunity whenever we can have the pitching performance that we had. I thought Sam came in and did a great job today as did Savannah Berkowitz and Savannah McHellon this weekend. Each found a way to help us be successful. It gives us some better depth going into conference."
Â
On Fresno State's hitting this weekend…
"Miranda just finds ways to get on base and put us in positions that we can score. She does the little things and steals bases. Sometimes it goes unnoticed because other people hit the long ball but she's a spark plug for us. Savannah had a very good weekend and Hayleigh Galvan does the dirty work. She finds hits and plays hard."
Â
On what's next…
"Illinois will be a tough opponent from the Big 10 and Cal Poly is always strong. We're just going to take it one game at a time and figure out the places where we can get better. We're hoping to get some good weather this week so we can work on some fundamental things and we have those last four games before we head into conference."
