Diamond 'Dogs Summer Baseball Update No. 2

The summer baseball season continues for 21 Fresno State baseball student-athletes playing in summer leagues across the country. After taking an initial look on June 19, let's see how the Diamond 'Dogs continue to perform this summer.
Zach Ashford, Outfielder, YD Red Sox (Cape Cod League)
Ashford, a soon-to-be senior, is playing for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in the Cape Cod League and has continued to light it up offensively after earning Second-Team All-Mountain West honors this spring.
In 29 games, the Clovis native is hitting .293 with 27 hits, one double, seven RBIs, 18 runs and has stolen six bases while drawing a team-high 14 walks.
After reaching base in all but one of the 'Dogs 54 games this season, Ashford has reached base in 24 of the 29 games he has played in this summer with base hits in 21 games, including four multi-hit performances.
The Buchanan High School graduate got off to a blazing start to the season with a four-hit performance in YD's season-opening 10-9 win over the Bourne Braves on June 12 and went 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and a run scored on July 5 against the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.
The Red Sox currently lead the East Division of the Cape Cod League with a 18-8-4 overall record with the regular season scheduled to go through Aug. 2 and the playoffs beginning on Aug. 4.

Tatum, who will enter his fifth and final season as a Bulldog next spring, has appeared this season for the Crabs as both a position player and a pitcher. He has played in all 32 games this summer for the Crabs hitting .347 from the plate leading the team in hits (43), runs (29), doubles (12), triples (1) and RBIs (27).
On the mound, Tatum has tossed 6.2 innings appearing in three games picking up a win on June 6 against Seals Baseball tossing four shutout innings with five strikeouts.
The Clovis native recently went on a 16-game hitting streak from June 22 - July 13 and has notched at least one hit in 26 of 32 games and has 12 multi-hit games.
In a 18-2 win over the Walnut Creek Crawdads on July 7, the Clovis High School graduate went 3-for-5 with a pair of singles, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.
The Crabs are currently 24-8 on the season with their regular season finale set for Aug. 5 against the Bay Area Blues.

Sullivan, who will enter his redshirt junior season this fall, has joined Tatum on the Crabs this summer and has tossed 11.2 innings in eight appearances on the mound while striking out eight.
The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native has thrown a summer-high two innings in three games, including two shutout innings against the Walnut Creek Crawdads on July 8.
Omar Veloz, Catcher, Riverside Bulldogs (Southern California Collegiate Baseball League)/Duluth Huskies (Northwoods League)
After redshirting the 2018 season, Veloz has played in 10 games for the Riverside Bulldogs of the Southern California Collegiate Baseball League hitting .216 from the plate with eight hits, three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs and six runs scored.
In a wild 19-18 loss to the Southern California Bombers on June 26, Veloz went 3-for-6 with a double, home run, three RBIs and three runs scored.
The Los Angeles native played in nine games earlier this summer for the Duluth Huskies in the Northwoods League finishing with five hits, a double, scored four runs, drove in seven RBIs and drew three walks. Veloz drove in a season-high three runs on June 5 in an 11-2 win at St. Cloud before playing his last game in Minnesota on June 10.
Isaiah Davis, Pitcher, Eau Claire Express (Northwoods League)
Davis, a junior this fall, has appeared in eight games on the mound in relief for the Eau Claire Express. The Rialto, Calif., native has tossed 12.0 innings limiting opponents to 11 hits, 11 runs, five earned while striking out 14.
Davis picked up his first win last Saturday (July 14) with four shutout innings in relief striking out an impressive eight batters in a 12-5 win over Waterloo. The Express went 13-22 in the first half of the season and are 7-5 so far in the second half and will end the regular season on Aug. 12 against St. Cloud.

Thimjon, a soon-to-be sophomore, has appeared in 14 games for the Express this summer collecting five hits, one double while driving in three RBIs.
Nikoh Mitchell, Pitcher, Kalamazoo Growlers (Northwoods League)
Mitchell has appeared in seven games in relief for Kalamazoo throwing 12 innings while holding opponents to eight hits, five runs and 10 strikeouts.
Notching at least one strikeout in all seven outings, the Hayward, Calif., native recorded a season-high 2.2 innings on June 27 against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters in a 12-8 win and has not pitched since July 5.
Jamison Hill, Pitcher, Kalamazoo Growlers (Northwoods League)
Hill, who along with Mitchell will be sophomores in the fall, has made six appearances on the mound for the Growlers this summer allowing only two hits and one unearned run in seven innings while striking out three. He last pitched for the Growlers on June 29.
Eddie Pena, Infielder, Licking County Settlers (Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League)
A senior in the fall, Pena is one of three Bulldogs playing for the Licking County Settlers in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League this summer. Pena has played in 27 games for the Settlers hitting .219 from the plate with 21 hits to go along with a home run, seven runs scored and 11 RBIs.
The Woodlake, Calif., native, who transferred to Fresno State from Fresno City College in 2017, had a summer-high three hits on June 21 against the Galion Graders going 3-for-4 with a run scored and a walk and hit his first home run of the season on July 11 against the Hamilton Joes.
The Settlers are currently 7-24 on the season and will play their final regular season game on July 29 against the Southern Ohio Copperheads.

A soon-to-be redshirt sophomore, Carvajal has made four starts on the mound this summer throwing 22.2 innings while striking out 20 and has posted a 4.77 ERA.
After only tossing two innings in his first start on June 13, the Cerritos, Calif., native has gone at least six innings in his next three starts allowing only seven earned runs while striking out 19.
On June 28 against the Grand Lake Mariners, Carvajal went 8.1 innings allowing six hits, four runs, three earned and struck out eight in a 9-8 loss.
Austin White, Outfielder, Licking County Settlers (Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League)
White, who will be a fourth-year junior this fall, has joined Carvajal and Pena in Ohio and has played in four games scoring a run and driving in a run and has not played since June 28.
Zach Presno, Catcher, Anchorage Glacier Pilots (Alaska Baseball League)
After appearing in 48 games and smacking eight home runs as a freshman this spring, Presno is one of three 'Dogs on the Anchorage Glacier Pilots this summer.
The Clovis native has appeared in 17 games this summer recording 10 hits, two home runs, five runs scored and seven RBIs. In a 8-5 win over the Anchorage Bucs on July 2, Presno went 2-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs.
The Pilots are currently 14-17 and will play their final regular season game on July 30 against the Chugiak Chinooks.

Nogales has appeared in 19 games for the Pilots this summer and has five hits scoring two runs and driving in three RBIs while drawing 16 walks, tied for second-most on the team.
JT Arruda, Infielder, Anchorage Glacier Pilots (Alaska Baseball League)
After starting all 54 games at third base as a redshirt freshman this spring, Arruda has joined Nogales and Presno in the Alaska Baseball League with the Glacier Pilots appearing in 31 games so far this summer.
The Clovis native was named to Alaska Baseball League All-Star Game on Sunday and currently ranks fourth on the team in batting average (.286), while leading the team in hits (32), runs (30) and stolen bases (16).
Arruda has tallied 11 multi-hit games this summer and went for a summer-high three base hits on July 8 in a 12-4 win over the Chinooks.

Chastain, a senior outfielder this fall for the Bulldogs, has appeared in 21 games for the Blues this summer with 13 hits smacking a double and triple to go along with five RBIs, nine runs scored and 11 stolen bases.
On July 3 against the Arroyo Seco Saints, Chastain went 2-for-4 with a run scored in a 5-2 loss.
The Blues, who are 23-16 on the summer, have six regular season games remaining before the California Collegiate League Tournament runs July 27-29.
Dylan Johnson, Outfielder, Dodge City A's (Jayhawk League)
After redshirting this season for the 'Dogs, Johnson has appeared in 23 games for the A's of the Jayhawk League this summer hitting .302 from the plate with 19 hits smacking a double, triple, has driven in nine RBIs and scored 13 runs.
The Blythe, Calif., native has a hit in 15 games this summer and went for a summer-high three hits on July 2 against Hays with three singles in a 15-5 loss. The A's, who are 19-11, conclude the regular season on July 25 at the Great Bend Bat Cats.
Isaiah Haddad, Infielder, Dodge City A's (Jayhawk League)
Another redshirt this past spring, Haddad, a Fresno native, has played in 20 games for Dodge City this summer with eight hits, one double, one home run, six runs scored, seven stolen bases and 10 RBIs.
In a 11-1 win over Fort Collins on July 12, Haddad went 2-for-4 with a single and home run.
Robbie Peters, Pitcher, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Chicago Suburban Baseball League)
The final redshirt for the 'Dogs playing this summer, Peters, is joined by three Bulldog teammates on the Crystal Lake Cardinals in the Chicago Suburban Baseball League.
In 17 appearances on the mound, Peters is 0-3 with two saves in 18 innings of work striking out 19. The Tulsa, Okla., native has recorded at least one strikeout in 11 appearances and twice has notched three strikeouts in a pair of games.
The Cardinals, who are 27-13 this summer, conclude the regular season on July 28 against Hammond before the Chicago Suburban Baseball League semifinals and championship on July 29.

A redshirt sophomore in the fall, Jones has pitched in seven games for the Cardinals this summer posting a 4-2 record with a 3.36 ERA.
In 25 innings of action, Jones has 22 strikeouts while only allowing six walks. Jones' most recent outing, on July 11 against the Addison Braves, was standout for the Sacramento native as he went six innings allowing four hits, one earned run with seven strikeouts in a 8-4 victory.
Nolan Dempsey, Infielder, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Chicago Suburban Baseball League)
A senior in the fall, Dempsey has played in 33 games in the infield for the Cardinals this summer hitting .409 from the plate leads the team in doubles (16) & stolen bases (14) and ranks second in hits (47).
The junior college transfer from San Mateo, Calif., native, who played in 46 games for the 'Dogs this spring, is tied for the team-lead with 29 runs scored and has driven in 17 RBIs and hit two home runs.
Dempsey has 13 multi-hit games this summer with a pair of four-hit performances on June 15 & June 28 to go along with four three-hit outings.
Miles Tomczak, Outfielder, Crystal Lake Cardinals (Chicago Suburban Baseball League)
The final 'Dog on the Cardinals this summer is sophomore-to-be Tomczak who continues to swing a hot bat after a strong start to the summer.
Playing all 40 games, the Ione, Calif., native is hitting .366 to rank third on the team with those over 37 at-bats while leading the team with 48 hits and 37 RBIs.
Tomczak is right behind Dempsey in the doubles department as he has 15 on the season and ranks second on the team with six home runs. He has also racked up 13 multi-hit games, including a pair of four-hit performances, and recently went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored in a 10-6 win over the Kane County Phantoms on July 15.
