Bulldog Swimming and Diving Prepare for Pepperdine

Bulldogs vs. Pepperdine
The Bulldogs have a break in competition but will continue to train for their trip to Malibu next weekend to swim against the Pepperdine Waves. The Waves are coached by Tim Elson who is entering his 15th year with Pepperdine and holds a record of 118-75. About the Waves
Pepperdine hosts their season opener this weekend starting with a dual meet Friday against Pomona-Pitzer then head to Cal Baptist for more competition. Last year the Waves held a dual meet record of 11-3.
Last Time Against the Waves
The Bulldogs matched up against Pepperdine November 8, 1998 in a double dual meet including CAL that resulted in a Fresno State 199- 102 win over the Waves. Former Bulldog Amalia Gonzalez (200 Back, 100 Fly) and current ?Dog Temple Cowden (500 Free, 200 IM) led the way with two second-place finishes apiece. Also taking second in individual events were former Bulldogs Nicole Brushey (1000 Free) and Holly Gravatt (200 Breast).
Heading into Meet No. 3
The Bulldogs currently hold a dual meet record of 1-1 and placed second at the Colorado State Invitational last weekend. The ?Dogs, who came in second in the Invitational last year as well, competed without diver Lindsay Taunton and still swan strong enough to defeat seven of the ten women?s teams at the meet. Taunton is expected to return to the diving board in a week.
Bulldog Swimming Takes Second at Colorado State
Fresno State scored a total of 777 points in the Colorado State Invitational this weekend earning second place honors. Freshman Sara Quinn took center stage for the Bulldogs winning the 1650 Free with a time of 17:34.92 and placing fourth in the 500 Free with a time of 5:10.08. Quinn also swam a leg of the second place finishing 800 Free Relay (7:51.08) as well as placed fifth in the 200 Free. Also scoring for the Bulldogs was Temple Cowden who earned second place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:36.32 and second place in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:10.13. Cowden marked third place in the 500 Free on Friday.
Leading the Attack
Other top individual events placing at the Early Bird Invitational included a fourth place mark by Jennifer Brown in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:09.02, a second place spot in the 50 Free by Jesie Lewis with a time of 24.73 as well as a fourth place from Lewis in the 100 Free. Also, Lena Darnell took fourth in the 50 Free touching a time of 25.14 and Julie Enright took third place in the 1650 Free with a time of 17:48.87. Laurel Frisinger placed third in the 200 Fly earning a time of 2:12.83.
In Relay Action
The 200 Free Relay placed second and debuted a time of 1:39.05. The Bulldogs took fourth in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 4:04.43 and took third and fourth in the 200 Medley Relay. The ?Dogs earned second in both the 400 Free Relay the 800 Free Relay.
Rietzel Receives ?Mr. Bulldog? Honors
Kristi Rietzel, along with 18 fellow Fresno State student athletes have been honored by the Bulldog Foundation by being designated as the 1999-2000 Mr. Bulldog recipients. Rietzel and other recipients were selected for their character, athletic and academic success. Rietzel, a senior on the swimming and diving team is working toward a degree in nursing. Rietzel holds the third place spot in both the 400 IM and the 1650 Free on the Bulldogs All-Time Top Five list and places fifth on the all-time list in the 200 Fly.
