Fresno - Scoring does not always come from the usual suspects, especially in games where the opponent is not the caliber that you have been used to. But after squaring off versus some of the nation?s better squads in the past month, Fresno State found net with some unusual Bulldogs firing on goal to claim a 3-0 win over Hawai?i Friday.
With the hot Fresno sun blaring down on Bulldog Stadium, Fresno State shot out to a quick 1-0 lead when Morgan Oliveira found net in at the 12:10 mark off a loose ball from 15-yards out. Oliveira set the tone for the Bulldog attack firing six shots on the day and constantly pressuring the Wahine? defense with her direct play.
Sarah McEachen, who suffered through most of the early season with a deep thigh bruise, doubled up the Bulldog advantage when she fired on net from 15-yards out. The goal marks only the third one for the senior who plays mainly along the backline.
With a safe 2-0 lead at the half and a seasoned backline playing well, head coach Peter Reynaud pulled his All-Far West keeper Jennifer Johnstone. Johnstone, with already six shutouts on the season, cheered for the second 45-minute period with frosh Mary-tyler Wahl in net earning her first action as a Bulldog.
Wahl was received a slight scare in the 55th minute when an apparent Wahine? goal was called back for offsides. The young keeper centered herself for the rest of the half and recorded the first shutout of her career while making three saves to preserve the win for the ?Dogs.
To finish off the Wahine?, junior transfer Andrea Baier found net from 30 yards out in the games 78th minute. It was the first game Baier saw as a Bulldog and her shot was the first of her career.
"I could not have been more pleased with the effort today," Reynaud said. "We finally were playing well enough to put [Wahl] into the game where she had a chance to succeed. It was a tremendous performance."
The ?Dogs finished the day with 30 shots to Hawai?i?s six. The 14 saves recorded by Wahine? Demarre Sanchez was the most tallied by a Fresno State opponent this fall. The win moves the Bulldog unbeaten streak to six -- the longest in the history of Fresno State women's soccer.
The Bulldogs will see their next action at home on Sunday when they square off versus regional rival Sacramento State at 2 p.m.
