FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs honored their four seniors in Fresno State's final home meet this weekend not only by gifts of flowers and balloons, but also giving the seniors a final meet to remember.
"This was the biggest win in Fresno State?s dual meet history," head coach Daniella Irle said following the Bulldogs? 136-126 defeat of Pac-10's Oregon State and a 176-108 defeat of the San Diego State Aztecs. "Oregon State is always ranked nationally, they are well respected and were the favored team going into today?s meet."
The Bulldogs found their ten point spread against the Beavers with eight first place showings and five second place finishes.
Scoring with two first place finishes for Fresno State was Jesie Lewis winning the 50 free (:24.69) and the 100 free (:53.32). Other first place finishers for the Bulldogs include Heidi Crompton in the 200 free (1:55.27), Summir Case in the 100 back (:59.00), Rebecca Coplin in the 500 free (5:03.83), Kristi Rietzel in the 100 fly (:59.30) and Temple Cowden in the 400 IM (4:33.48) and the 200 fly (2:07.00),.
"We swam out of our minds," Irle said. "The freshman came through and the returners were everything I new I knew they?d be. I?m so proud of all of them."
Soundly defeating the San Diego State Aztecs, the Bulldogs garnered ten first place finishes followed by nine second place finishes and a one-two-three sweep of the 1650 free, 100 free and 500 free events.
Julie Enright found herself in first place in the 1650 free with a time of 17:33.13. Case again took first in the 100 back as did Cowden in the 200 fly and 400 IM. Coplin took first in the 500 free and Lewis took both the 50 and 100 free. Bulldog diver Lindsay Taunton dove against San Diego State garnering two first place finishes for the Bulldogs in the 1-meter and 3-meter, her fourth on the season. Closing out the meet, the 400 free relay marked first place with a time of 3:35.10.
Several season-best records broke and three Bulldogs swam lifetime bests against the Aztecs and Beavers. Klenner swam a lifetime best in the 1650 free earning a time of 17:39.73. Enright earned her lifetime best in the 1650 free with a time of 17:33.13 and Deanna Braun hit her life-best in the 1650 with a time of 17:48.51.
"San Diego State is a much improved team and they swam a solid meet, but so did we," Irle said. "We?ve never lost to them and we had no intentions of losing to them today."
The Bulldogs meet up with the Oregon State Beavers again at the Speedo Cup in two weeks. A re-match that Irle said she is looking forward to.
