Swimming Takes Eighth at Speedo Cup Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State swimming and diving team took eighth place with 492.5 points in the Speedo Cup Invitational held in Long Beach, Calif. this past weekend marking the end of the fall swimming season. Nevada (928.0) took first for the women followed by second place UCLA (811.0) and third place Oregon State (711.5). For the men, UC Santa Barbara took first with 1208.5 points.
In almost every relay event the Bulldogs found themselves placing in the top ten. The 200 medley relay team earned a sixth place finish marking a time of 1:49.56. Legging the race was Summir Case, Holly Calcote, Kristi Rietzel and Jesie Lewis. The 200 free relay (Lewis, Lena Darnell, Case and Heidi Crompton) finished eighth with a season-best time of 1:38.91. The 400 medley relay (Case, Brown, Rietzel, and Lewis) took fourth with a season-best time of 3:58.11. The 800 free relay (Jennifer Brown, Temple Cowden, Sara Quinn, and Crompton) placed ninth with a time of 7:51.48.
Top ten Individual finishers for the weekend include Cowden who took sixth in the 400 IM earning a time of 4:36.24 and Crompton who placed eighth in the 200 free with a time of 1:57.41. Rebecca Coplin, in the 500 free, finished ninth with a time of 5:04.45 and Case took eighth in the 100 back with a time of :59.09. Sara Quinn marked her season best swim and seventh place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 17:28.10. Bethany Starkweather finished eighth in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.83, her season best, and Lewis hit seventh in the 100 free with a time of 52.94, her season best as well.
Several Bulldogs also swam individual season bests. Rietzel swam the 400 IM in 4:40.17, her 1999-00 individual season best. Starkweather, also in the 400 IM broke her season best with a time of 4:41.61.
Braun (17:47.30) and Starkweather (18:05.78) marked their season bests in the 1650 free as did Starkweather in the 200 back with a time of 2:09.83. Case also earned an individual season best time in the 200 back with 2:12.63.
In the 200 breast Coplin swam her season best 2:28.22 and Klenner, in the 200 fly, marked her season best time with 2:10.75.
In the 200 IM, Cowden beat her individual season best time touching a time of 2:12.52. Heather King (2:15.57) and Rietzel (2:14.84) also marked their individual season bests.
In the 50 free Tami Bazacos marked her season best touching a time of 25.48 as did Calcote with a time of 25.58. Heidi Olsen also earned her season best in the 50 free with a time of 26.41.
The 200 free provided Lewis the opportunity to beat her individual season best time touching the wall at 1:56.73. Darnell was also among Lewis in achieving her individual season best time marking a time of 2:00.72.
In the 100 fly Jessica Klenner (1:01.63), Calcote (1:04.04) and Krisiti Markiewitz (1:04.83) also marked individual season best times.
In the 500 free, Brown earned her season-best coming in 15th with a time of 5:08.29. Jessica Henley swam almost three seconds faster than her season-best touching a time of 5:49.52. Henley placed 125th. Other Bulldogs swimming individual season-best times were Klenner (5:11.66), Deanna Braun (5:14.21), and Kristen Miller (5:13.59). Cosgrove (1:14.39) and Olsen (1:12.78) made their individual season bests in the 100 breast and in the 100 back Frisinger (1:00.42), Starkweather (1:01.06) and Suzanne Dieriex (1:16.19) all topped their season best swims.
Last year the Fresno State Bulldogs took third at the Speedo Cup Invitational scoring 809.5 points. BYU took first with 1075.5 points followed by Oregon State with 833.0 points.
