Fresno, Calif. - Pitcher Tom Graham threw his fourth complete game of the years as the Bulldogs defeated San Jose State 10-3 at Beiden Field. The win moves Fresno State to 22-25 overall and 5-11 in the Western Athletic Conference.
The Spartans got on the board with a run in the first inning, but the Bulldogs bounced back with four in their half of the inning.
With second baseman Tom Creighton on first, leftfielder Anthony Acevedo increased his hitting streak to 11 games with a single. The next batter, first baseman Brandon Gemoll grounded to the second baseman, who flipped it to shortstop Mike Rouse, but Rouce and pulled off the bag to early, allowing Acevedo to reach second. One batter later Creighton and Acevedo scored on a single by designated hitter Jeff Prieto. On the play at the plate Gemoll went to third and Prieto advanced to second. Centerfielder Tony Guzman followed up Prieto's single with one of his own, scoring Gemoll and Prieto.
Fresno State would pick up another run in the next inning as Graham continued to dominate the Spartans. San Jose State would not score another run until the sixth inning. The Spartans hopes of a comeback were dashed when the Bulldogs scored four runs in the seventh inning.
After Creighton was taken out on a grounder, Gemoll singled to left and as Acevedo advanced to third, the leftfieler threw the ball to second base, but no one was covering, allowing Acevedo to score and moving Gemoll to third. A double by Garcia scored Gemoll and two batters later Garcia scored on a double by Guzman. Fresno Statted capped off its scoring by adding another run in the ninth.
The Bulldogs and the Spartans will be back in action at Beiden Field tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
