No. 1 Fresno State Softball Opens 1999 Season In Style

FRESNO, Calif. - Top-ranked Fresno State softball opened its 1999 season with power after belting eight home runs and outscoring its opponents 36-7 with wins over UC Santa Barbara (12-5, 13-2) and Cal Poly (3-0 in 9 inn., 8-0 in 5 inn.).
In the doubleheader sweep at UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 13, Fresno State hit .462 against the Gauchos after going 30-65 from the plate collectively with 25 runs, 4 doubles, 5 home runs, 24 RBI and a .754 slugging percentage. Highlighting the doubleheader were three freshmen (LHP Kristen Hunter, PH Lindsay Fossatti and 2B Lovie Jung) who batted .812 (9-11) with 9 runs, two doubles, 3 home runs, 10 RBI and 20 total bases for a 1.812 slugging pct. In the first game, Jung connected on her first career home run in her first at bat (2-run shot), Jr. 1B Angela Cervantez hit her 4th career dinger and So. DP Janna Todd connected on her 3rd career home run. In that game, Sr. RHP Lindsay Parker picked up the win for the Bulldogs. In game two, Hunter and Fossatti her their first career home runs. Hunter went 4-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI after solo shot and Fossatti came in as a pinch hitter in the 7th and hit a 3-run blast. Hunter also picked up her first collegiate win after scattering six hits with five strikeouts.
In the doubleheader sweep at Cal Poly on Feb. 14, Fresno State went extra innings in the first game and got the win on a 1-out three-run inside-the-park home run from Becky Witt in the top of the 9th. Parker picked up the win after going the distance with seven strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the year. In game two, Witt hit her second career home run -- another 3-run inside-the-park shot over the centerfielder's head to put the 'Dogs up 6-0. She hit .625 (5-8) against Cal Poly with 2 runs, 7 RBI, double and 2 home runs. Hunter recorded her first career shutout on a one-hitter with a season-best 10 strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the year.
