Fresno, Calif. - Former Bulldog mens soccer standout Mario Sanchez has returned to Fresno State as the assistant coach on the mens coaching staff. Sanchez replaces former assistant Paul Meehan, who left in the spring.
"Mario has a passionate and very practical approach to the game," head coach Dave Chesler said. "I expect his ability to relate to the players from a practical and realistic perspective will be a major asset in his first year. Marios passion and dedication to the Bulldog program will certainly be beneficial in the recruiting process."
In four years with the Bulldogs, Sanchez scored six goals and added 15 assists. A two-time Fresno State MVP, he was named second team All-Far West in 1995 and was a member of the first-team in 1997. In 1995 he followed up his All-Far West selection with a second team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection and following the 1997 season he was named first team All-Western Athletic Conference.
"Mario has demonstrated his ability as a leader," Chesler said. "He is a former two-time team MVP and captain. Our players will respect and relate very positively to Marios guidance."
Sanchez will get his first full look at the 99 Bulldogs when they report for the first fall practice on August 14. Coach Sanchez and Bulldogs will get the season started with the annual alumni game on Saturday, August 28 and will have their first match of the season on Wednesday, September 1 when they take on Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. at Bulldog Stadium.
