Bulldogs Take High Road For Victory

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Melvin Ely scored 21 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Fresno State to a 96-65 non-conference rout of High Point on Friday night.
Ely hit all 10 of his field goal attempts for Fresno State (10-6) and blocked six shots.
Derek VanWeerdhuizen led High Point (6-7) with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
Fresno State, after a slow start, used a 20-5 run in the first half to take a 34-17 lead with three minutes left in the half. Terrance Roberson, who scored all 10 of his points in the first half, hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer, giving Fresno a 41-26 halftime lead.
VanWeerdhuizen scored eight points to lead a 14-2 run early in the second half as High Point cut the lead to 46-39 with just over 16 minutes left in the game.
Fresno State upped the margin to 12 points again but High Point rallied again to close the margin to 53-46 with 12:20 remaining. Ely and Larry Abney each hit a pair of baskets to start a 21-6 run for the Bulldogs.
Abney finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds while Courtney Alexander added 16 and Demetrius Port had 11.
Brooks Lee scored 12 for High Point and Mantas Ignatavicius finished with 10.
