FRESNO, Calif. -
GAME NO. 13
Fresno State (7-5) takes on Saint Mary?s (7-5) Saturday in only its second road game of the year. The Bulldogs are coming off an emotional come-from-behind 62-60 victory over Long Beach State on Tuesday. The Gaels head into Saturday's contest off a 50-48 loss to Utah on Thursday. FS leads the all-time series between the two schools 3-2.
SEVEN IS JUST FINE
The Bulldogs battled Long Beach State on Tuesday with only seven healthy players, the eighth consecutive game FS has had only seven with which to play a game. Guard Laura Paukert (ruptured ACL) and forward Janie McCombs (ruptured Achilles? tendon) suffered season-ending injuries before the season began, limiting the team to eight players. Channan High recently missed five games due to a stress fracture in her left foot, knocking the Bulldogs down to seven. Most recently, guard Porsha Boyd has fallen ill with migrane headaches and missed the last three games. Fresno State has gone 5-3 when it has only seven players available.
LOGAN NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lindsay Logan was named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for her efforts against Bradley on Dec. 20. In that game, Logan led both teams with a career-high 17 points and 11 assists in notching her third double-double of the year. She also added four rebounds and three steals in the victory. Logan is currently leading the conference in assists at 7.55 per game, nearly three assists more than second place Tammy Goyne of Tulsa. She is trying to become the first freshman in WAC history to lead the conference in assists.
NOTES TO NOTICE
--- Freshmen accounted for 74 percent (46 of 62 points) of Fresno State?s offense in Tuesday?s victory over Long Beach State. The Bulldogs? top three scorers were all freshmen.
--- The win over LBSU was the second time this season FS has come from more than 10 points down in the second half to win a game. The Bulldogs were down 15 points with 7:43 remaining against Georgetown in the season-opener but stormed back to win. Fresno State was down 13 against Long Beach State.
--- Lindsay Logan?s 7.55 per game assists average is tops in the Western Athletic Conference and sixth in the nation.
--- The Bulldogs are two games over .500 for the first time since the 1996-97 season, when a victory over Colorado State improved their record to 14-12.
SCOUTING SAINT MARY?S
The Gaels enter Saturday's game with a 7-5 record after losing to Utah 50-48 on Thursday. SMC is coming off a very successful 1998-99 year in which it had a record of 26-7, won the West Coast Conference and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where it lost in the first round to Notre Dame 61-57. Like last year, this year?s team is led by Tracy Morris. The senior forward was the WCC Player of the Year and a Kodak All-American a year ago. She leads the Gaels with a 18.8 points per game average and is second on the team in rebounding with a 7.2 per game average. She is also shooting 51 percent (29 of 57) from three-point range. The Gaels are coached by Kelly Graves. He has posted a 53-21 record and is in his third year at the helm.
ALL-TIME VS. SAINT MARY?S
Fresno State leads the all-time series 3-2. The Gaels, however, have won the last two contests, including last year?s 75-64 victory at the North Gym.
FRESNO STATE LAST ACTION
The Bulldogs picked up one of their more emotional victories of the season Tuesday night, coming from behind to defeat Long Beach State 62-60. Amanda Baker?s 18-foot jumper shot with 24 seconds left gave Fresno State its first lead of the game at 61-60. A Lindsay Logan free throw with four seconds left made it 62-60. Freshmen led the way for Fresno State, with Lindsay Logan (15), Tiffany Simon (13) and Laura Garcia (13) all scoring in double figures. The Bulldogs? rookies ended up scoring 46 of the 62 Fresno State points, or 74 percent of its offense on the night. FS trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half but chipped away at the 49ers? lead, eventually tying the game with 3:48 left. The win put Fresno State two games over .500 for the first time since the 1996-97 season.
AT LEAST SOMETHING IS STAYING CONSISTENT
Despite the injuries Fresno State has had to deal with this year, its starting lineup has remained virtually unchanged through the season?s first 12 games. Guards Lindsay Logan and Laura Garcia and forwards Amanda Baker and Tiffany Lewis have started in every game. Tiffany Simon, Omelogo Udeze and Channan High have shared the starting duties at the other forward position.
THE MAGIC NUMBER IS STILL 65
Everything anybody needs to know about a Fresno State game can be summed up in one number ? 65. When the Bulldogs hold an opponent to 65 points or less, they are 7-0. But when their opponent gets over 65 points, they are 0-5.
THE LEWIS-O-METER
Tiffany Lewis? assault on the Fresno State rebounding record book has continued in recent games. She moved up to third on the career rebounding average list after a 17-rebound performance against Drexel. She also moved into the top 10 in career rebounds with nine against Drexel. Lewis currently rests ninth in that category and should jump even higher Saturday. She is also on pace to break the single-season rebound mark of 287, held by Janee Young. Lewis, who has 133 so far this year, will have to average 9.6 boards per game the rest of the season to break that mark. She is currently pulling down a WAC-best 11.1 per game. Following is where Lewis stands on Fresno State?s rebounding record lists:
