Swimming Earmarks Medley Relays in Successful First Day

FT. COLLINS, Colo. - After handidly defeating New Mexico in a dual meet last night at Colorado State, the Fresno State swimming and diving team continued its success this evening in the 2000 Early Bird Invitational, hosted by Colorado State.
Participating in a two-day nine-team women's field, the Bulldogs currently stand in second place after day one which saw Fresno State's medley relay teams perform exceptionally strong and junior sprint/mid free Jesie Lewis notch her third individual crown this season.
Fresno State tallied 221 points and trails Colorado State (270 pts.) by just 49 points. Wyoming is in third place (169.50 pts.), Utah is next (147 pts.), New Mexico is fifth (129.50), Denver is sixth (96 pts.), Colorado School of Mines is next (34 pts), Metro State is eighth (4 pts.) and the University of Colorado rounds out the field (2 pts.).
In the first event, the 200 freestyle relay got things going for the Bulldogs who placed second with a time of 1:39.05 (Jesie Lewis, Lena Darnell, Chandra Riberich and Summir Case). Lewis had a split of 51.97 in her first leg for the Bulldogs.
In the 500 freestyle, Jennifer Brown placed third with a time of 5:11.49 and Temple Cowden finished fifth with a season-best mark of 5:12.73. In the 200 IM, Cowden was the highest Bulldog finisher with a sixth place finish (2:14.87).
Lewis collected her third individual title on the season after capturing the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 24.56. Case finished fourth with a season-best mark of 24.70.
In the 400 medley relay, Fresno Sate clocked 4:00.67 to finish second to Colorado State's time of 3:59.99. The Bulldog "A" relay team included Case, Kristi Markiewitz, Laurel Frisinger and Lewis. The Bulldog's "B" team finished fifth with a time of 4:04.75 (Julian Hill, Jennifer Brown, Jessica Klenner and Lena Darnell).
The invitational resumes tomorrow morning at 9:00 am.
