After playing their last four matches at home, the Bulldogs close out the month of October with just one match. Fresno State is on the road at San Jose State this Saturday, Oct. 28, 7:30 pm, in the Spartan Gym. The 'Dogs will look to even their conference record against SJSU which defeated Fresno State, 3-1, in Fresno on Oct. 11.
Fresno State-San Jose State Volleyball on the Web
San Jose State's campus radio station KSJS 90.5 FM will broadcast this weekend's match live from Spartan Gym. The audio broadcast also will be available on the web at www.ksjs.org.
Bulldogs Getting Wheels in Motion
After rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the victory over Tulsa and giving itself its first come-from-behind victory on the season two weeks ago, Fresno State has won five of its last seven. Since their loss to Hawai'i, the Bulldogs are averaging 72.57 kills and are hitting .249 (508-192-1267) in their last seven appearances. Also averaging 62.29 assists per match, the 'Dogs are serving up 7.14 aces a match and netting 12.21 blocks per match since Sept. 30 with their five-game home victory over Nevada. Recording nine double-digit block performances to date, Fresno State has tallied 10 or more blocks a match in five of its last seven while averaging 64.71 digs a match in its last seven outings. Also in their last seven contests, the Bulldogs have hit .221 or better in six of those matches. Fresno State had its second-highest hitting percentage of the year after hitting .360 against SMU (highest was .364 versus Marshall on Sept. 16) last week. Fresno State also had its first sweep over an opponent since Marshall against TCU last weekend.
Bulldogs Rank Second in WAC Attendance
Fresno State ranks second in the conference in total and average attendance. The Bulldogs, who have played 13 matches at home this season, have drawn 6,119 fans for an average of 471 per match. Eclipsing the 100,000 fans mark for five straight seasons, Hawai'i leads the nation in attendance and is averaging 6,987 fans in 12 matches.
Lucky Seven
Junior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid (San Diego, Calif.) has put together her second straight double-figure kill streak. After opening the season with seven straight, McQuaid's current seven-match streak has her averaging 17.0 kills and 4.71 blocks. Sophomore middle blocker Lindsay Closs (Spokane, Wash.) also has put together seven straight double-figure kill matches and is averaging 13.0 kills and 5.43 blocks.
Head Coach Lindy Vivas
In her tenth season as head coach of the Bulldog volleyball program, Lindy Vivas (UCLA, 1980) picked up her 250th career win in the season opener against Siena. Now 11 wins shy of capturing her 200th win at Fresno State, Vivas has directed the 'Dogs to five postseason appearances in the last nine years. The two-time WAC Coach of the Year honoree has led the Bulldogs to two NCAA Tournament showings (1991-98) and three NIVC appearances (1995-94-92) since her arrival in 1991. Averaging 20 wins a year with an 84-43 (.661) home court record, Vivas has coached three all-region and 15 All-WAC picks. Vivas, who led the Bulldogs to three straight WAC Volleyball Tournaments (1996-98), owns a 14-year career record of 261-183 (.588) and a ten-year school record of 189-123 (.606).

In addition, fans can listen to the "Lindy Vivas Show" and watch highlights from the 1999 season on the school's web site. In her last seven matches, McQuaid is hitting .336 (119-38-241) and has collected double-digit kills in every match but two (17 of 19) on the year ... Closs was next after collecting 27 kills (3.86 kpg), six total blocks (0.86 bpg) and hitting .382 in seven games ... In her last seven matches, Closs is hitting .270 (91-34-211) and has 10-plus kills in 16 of 22 matches played ... San Jose State (16-5, 7-1 WAC)
Solidifying its hold on second place in the WAC standings, San Jose State is coming off a pair of conference wins at home against SMU (15-5, 15-8, 15-9) and TCU (13-15, 15-6, 15-7, 15-12). Riding a six-match win streak, its second longest of the year, SJSU has played just six matches at home in which the Spartans are 5-1. The Spartans have just one conference match on their slate this week as Fresno State plays SJSU for the second time in WAC play in the Spartan Gym at 7:30 pm on Saturday, Oct. 28. As a team, San Jose State is hitting .237 and is averaging 16.53 kills and 16.77 digs per game. The Spartans also are averaging just over 2.00 blocks per game (2.01 bpg) while boasting the league's top kill per game leader in senior middle blocker Joslynn Gallop. On the season, Gallop has tallied 452 kills for a league-leading average of 5.79 kills a game. Hitting .296 on the year, she leads the team in blocking (71, 0.91 bpg) and is second in digs (216, 2.77 dpg). Complementing Gallop is junior outside hitter Brianna Blair. Blair has totaled 307 kills and is averaging 3.94 kills per game. Hitting .233 to date, Blair leads SJSU in service aces (25, 0.33 sapg) and is second in blocks (64, 0.84 bpg) and third in digs (194, 2.55 dpg). Junior setter Savannah Smith has dished out 1,027 assists for an average of 13.34 assists per game.
Tuley's Career Kill Mark in Jeopardy This Weekend
Gallop, who has been a two-time WAC Player of the Week selection this season, is approaching the league's all-time career mark in kills. Averaging 4.35 kills per game in her career, Gallop entered last weekend with 1,750 career kills and collected 38 kills in SJSU's two victories. With 1,788 career kills to date, Gallop is one kill shy of tying SMU's Erin Pryor (1996-99) for second place in the WAC's annals. She needs just 17 kills to break former Fresno State standout Tricia Tuley's all-time career kill mark in WAC and Fresno State history of 1,804 (1993-96). Tuley has been the only player in WAC history to eclipse the 1,800 career kill plateau.
Last Time
In its last meeting three weeks ago on Oct. 11 in Fresno, Fresno State won the first game 16-14 but San Jose State rallied back to win the next three and extended its win streak to five straight over the Bulldogs and 36-16 in the series against the 'Dogs. Taking a 5-4 series lead in WAC contests, only, the Spartans won both meetings in 1999 and 1998 after the Bulldogs had won both meetings in 1997 and 1996. In the Bulldogs loss to San Jose State earlier this month, Fresno State outdug (70-65) and outblocked (11-6) the Spartans but managed to hit just .223 while SJSU hit .262 and went on to a 14-16, 15-10, 15-8, 15-12 WAC victory. The 'Dogs had four players tally double-digit kills and two posted a double-double. The Bulldogs were led by McQuaid who collected 18 kills and hit .385 (18-3-39) and added a match-high six blocks. Freshman outside hitter Kara Verwey (Kerman, Calif.) posted a double-double after adding 16 kills, 10 digs and two blocks. Closs chipped in 13 kills and added five blocks. Malu just missed a triple-double after posting 10 kills, nine assists and a match-high 15 digs. Sophomore setter Brittney Pearson (Sanger, Calif.) had a career-high 12 digs while Burnett notched her 15th double-figure dig match. Four Spartans had double-digit kills and three with 10 or more digs. Gallop powered past the Bulldogs for 26 kills while adding nine digs and five blocks. Brianna Blair chipped in 18 kills while Liz Hudson served up five service aces. The loss to San Jose State put Fresno State below the .500 level for the second time on the year in overall and league play.
