Volleyball Drops Two Game Lead in Loss to Rice

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (12-14, 5-7 WAC) could not hold on to a two game lead and dropped its fourth straight match overall and in Western Athletic Conference play to Rice (9-15, 15-10, 17-15, 9-15, 7-15).
The Bulldogs were led by freshman outside hitter Kara Verwey who tallied a match-high 21 kills, her third 20-kill performance on the season. Junior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid added 16 kills and three blocks while sophomore outside hitter Christy Burnett was the only Bulldog to manage a double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs.
For Rice, Karolina Zelinka had 18 kills and added a match-high 22 digs. Leigh Leman also notched a double-double with 17 kills and 12 digs.
As a team, Fresno State had more kills (76-67) but was outhit (.132-.203) and outblocked (15.5-9.0).
Fresno State will look to regroup tomorrow night when it closes out its 2000 home schedule against UTEP.
