FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's soccer head coach Peter Reynaud announced the signing of five players Monday afternoon -- Allison Wiegand, Darci Cullers, Lisa Esteves, Erin Sayegusa and Brittany Sigler.
Allison Wiegand (Modesto, Calif.) hails from Beyer High School where she was an all-league selection as a senior. Wiegand, a midfielder and forward, also was named the team's Most Valuable Player. She currently plays for the California Youth Soccer Association-Northern State Team. The team is part of the Olympic development program. Wiegand also plays for the San Joaquin Elite Football Club and is the team's leading goal scorer.
"Allison played both defense and offense for me on the state team," Reynaud said. "We just played in Phoenix and she scored three goals and two assists down there. I am looking forward to Allison being an outstanding goal scorer for us. She will add a great attacking punch to our front line."
Darci Cullers (Manteca, Calif.) played at Sierra High School where she earned numerous honors during her career. Cullers, a central defender, helped lead her team to a third consecutive league championship and section runner-up finish in 1998-99. She was the league and team MVP as a senior. Cullers helped lead Sierra to a section championship and was a first-team all-league selection as a prep junior. As a sophomore, Cullers was an all-league choice and she was the Tri-Valley Prep Award winner. She plays on the San Joaquin Elite Football Club team with Wiegand.
"Darci is a very strong central defender," Reynaud said. "She has good speed, good height and has a great competitive attitude. She is one of the top defenders in the Central Valley."
Lisa Esteves (Escalon, Calif.), a teammate of Cullers at Sierra High School, was an all-league selection and voted the league's top defender as a senior. Esteves, a defender, was a second-team all-league selection as a junior. She also plays on the San Joaquin Elite Football club team with both Cullers and Wiegand.
"I am looking forward to Lisa adding strength to our defense this season," Reynaud said. "She is an outside fullback who also can play in the center. Lisa tackles very hard and is very competitive."
Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) comes to Fresno State as one of the most highly decorated players in Hawaii. Sayegusa, a midfielder and forward, currently leads the OIA-East Conference with 13 goals this season. She was named the Female Athlete of the Year as a junior at Kaiser High School. As a sophomore, she was an all-state and first-team all-conference selection. Sayegusa plays for the Leahi club team, where she is the squad's co-captain. The team won the prestigious Surf Cup Tournament in 1998-99. Sayegusa is one of the leading goal scorers on her island of Hawaii.
"Erin is going to be a midfielder and forward for us," Reynaud said. "She is one of the top players off of the Hawaiian state team. She will add a great dimension to our offense because of her goal-scoring ability. She has great mobility and an aggressive tackler."
Brittany Sigler (Windsor, Calif.) was an all-league selection as both a junior and senior. Sigler, a fullback, also was named to the All-Empire team as a prep junior. In 1998, she was named to several all-tournament teams.
"Brittany is a strong, powerful fullback who will add size and strength to our defense," Reynaud said. "She is very good in the air and a very mobile player."
