POWAY, Calif. - In a highly anticipated match up from two national powerhouses, No. 1 UCLA won the first go around with a 5-2, eight-inning decision over Fresno State. With the win, the Bruins improved to 14-3 overall while the Bulldogs fell to 8-2. Amanda Scott held the Bruins' bats at bay into the seventh inning with two outs. With a runner on first and facing UCLA's first baseman Tairia Mims (eighth batter in the lineup), Mims connected on an opposite field home run to tie the game. Needing extra innings, UCLA wound up loading the bases courtesy of two base hits and a Bulldog fielding error. UCLA's third baseman Julie Adams grounded out to the shortstop to put the Bruins ahead 3-2. UCLA's right fielder Courtney Dale then followed with a two-run RBI single into right field for the pair of insurance runs. Before the gates opened for the come-from-behind win, Fresno State struck first and early by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kristen Hunter led off and was hit by pitch. With one out, Hunter advanced to second on a wild pitch by UCLA pitcher Stephanie Swenson. Lindsay Fossatti then doubled to right center to score Hunter. Fossatti advanced to third on another wild pitch before Alicia Dowland walked on a 3-2 count. Getting its second out in the inning, Vanessa Czarnecki was hit by pitch to load the bases. Lovie Jung took four straight balls to get the second RBI on the night for the Bulldogs. Fresno State closes out tournament play tomorrow against Ohio State at 9:30 am.
