FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU lived up to its reputation as the WAC's top scoring team by jumping on Fresno State early and never letting up, eventually beating the Bulldogs 75-52 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. The Bulldogs' record drops to 10-14 (3-7 WAC) while TCU improves to 15-12 (6-6).
The Horned Frogs, who lost the earlier meeting this year at Fresno, were inspired from the start. Behind the solid shooting of Janice Thomas and Tricia Payne, TCU picked up an early 10-point lead. Meanwhile, Fresno State's Channan High, the WAC's leading shot blocker and one of the Bulldogs' key post players, got into foul trouble and sat out most of the first half.
The Horned Frogs continued to pour it in on late in the first half, and when Payne nailed a three-pointer at the end of the opening 20 minutes, TCU led 40-22. Things didn't get much better in the opening five minutes of the second half, when a 15-5 TCU run increased its lead to 55-27.
But the Bulldogs didn't go away. Three-pointers by Amanda Baker and Laura Garcia shrunk the Horned Frog lead to 56-42 with 11:14 left. TCU, however, combined outside shooting with a strong inside game proved to be too much for Fresno State to handle. After Fresno State closed the advantage to 14, TCU quickly built it back up, taking a 65-45 lead at the 6:43 mark. FS was able to get no closer the rest of the contest.
Amanda Baker was the lone Bulldog in double figures. She scored 17. Lindsay Logan dished out six assists, bringing her season total to 161, just nine away from setting a new single-season Fresno State record for assists.
For the Horned Frogs, four players finished in double figures. Thomas led the group with 19 on 8 of 10 shooting. Jill Sutton had 12 while Kim Walter and Tricia Payne scored 11.
Fresno State returns home in preparation for its last homestand of the regular season. FS takes on Tulsa on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the North Gym.
