Fresno State gave third-ranked UCLA its first shutout loss on the year and first shutout loss overall since May 15, 1999 en route to the 2000 Hallowell Chevrolet Classic championship title. The Bulldogs captured the tournament title with a 6-0 record while the Bruins finished second with a 4-2 mark.
Fresno State scored its run in the bottom of the sixth. The Bulldogs led the inning off with a leadoff single to left field by senior RHP Amanda Scott. Sophomore outfielder Alex Roncancio came in to pinch run for Scott. Senior first baseman Angela Cervantez was then walked before sophomore third baseman Lindsay Fossatti struck out swinging. Junior shortstop Alicia Dowland also drew a walk to load the bases. Freshman catcher Pam West was at the plate when UCLA pitcher Amanda Freed threw a wild pitch that went to the backstop to score Roncancio. West finished her at bat with a strikeout and junior centerfielder Becky Witt ended the inning with a groundout to Freed.
In the championship game, Fresno State scored one run on six hits while UCLA managed two hits and committed an error. The Bulldogs posted at least one hit in every inning except the second en route to the title. The attendance at Bulldog Diamond was 3,796 -- the sixth largest crowd to watch Fresno State softball.
Scott, who has thrown eight consecutive shutout victories, has pitched 61.0 scoreless innings while striking out 69 batters and walking six. Scott also has scattered 16 hits in that span. She captured her second straight all-tournament honor after being named to the NFCA Leadoff Classic last weekend.
Fresno State will continue its homestand this upcoming week when it hosts #2 Arizona in a doubleheader at Bulldog Diamond (6 pm).
