Golf Competes in Far Western Intercollegiate

FRESNO, Calif. - Bulldogs Compete in 54th Annual Western Intercollegiate
Fresno State tees off today in the longest-running men's college gold tournament west of the Mississippi River today, April 3, at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif. The tournament is hosted by San Jose State and boats top-ranked teams such as No. 7 BYU, No. 13 Stanford No. 15 Washington, No. 19 Southern Cal, No. 24 Oregon State, No. 26 Oregon and No. 31 Kansas. Results will be posted nightly.
Top `Dogs Finish Sixth George Buzzini Stanislaus Invitational
The Bulldogs finished in sixth place with a team score of 317-305-305--927 at the CSU George Buzzini Stanislaus Invitational, a JV opportunity for Fresno State. The Bulldogs earned two top-20 finishes, one by Bulldog senior Mike Louden who lead Fresno State with a tie for seventh place and a score of 79-74-72--225. Senior Brandon Lamonica was close behind with a score of 76-77-76--229 tying for 15th. Junior Shaun Trimble took a three-round score of 83-76-78--237 finishing in a tie for 44th and junior Wes Lovell earned a score of 79-78-82--239 tying him for 54th. Sophomore Mike Kim earned a score of 84-78-79--241 finishing in a tie for 63rd. The tournament, played at the Turlock Country Club, a par-72 course, was won by the host school CSU Stanislaus. Dan Matthews from CSU Stanislaus won the individual play with a score of 71-73-73--217.
`Dogs No. 6 in Golfstat Head-to-Head Standings
The Bulldogs maintain the sixth place spot in the nation. Golftstat rankings will be released later this afternoon. This is the highest ranking team the Bulldogs have enjoyed since the 1987 team boasting now-PGA tour brothers David and Kevin Sutherland.
Bulldogs in Golfweek Magazine Poll
The Bulldogs are ranked 10th with a 71.57 rating and are second in District Seven, behind No. 5 BYU according to the Golfweek Magazine poll.
`Dogs Move Up to Eighth MasterCard Collegiate Poll
The Bulldogs maintained the No. 9 ranking this week in the MasterCard Collegiate Poll. Georgia Tech is in first followed by Clemson and Northwestern.
Three Bulldogs In Individual National Rankings
Also ranked nationally by Golfstat, Golfweek and MasterCard are three Bulldog golfers. Todd Rose moved into the top 30 in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings taking the No. 27 spot. Rose also ranks 37th in the Golfweek Magazine poll and 44th in the Golfstat individual rankings. Ryan King moved into 37th in Golfstat and is ranked 38th in the MasterCard poll. King is also ranked 34th in the Golfweek poll. Danny Paniccia earned a No. 73 ranking by Golfstat and is ranked 75th by MasterCard. King holds a per-round average of 71.71 and seven top 20 finishes in the seven tournaments this season. Rose holds a 71.86 per-round average and broke his lowest single round career score this season with a 66 in the Fresno Lexus Classic. Paniccia holds a per-round average of 72.38.
Rose and King in Position to Break All-Time Lowest Avg. Per-Round
Todd Rose and Ryan King are both currently breaking the Fresno State school record in lowest season average per-round. King is leading the way with current average of 71.71 followed by Rose who boasts a per-round average of 71.86. The school record stands at 71.89 in 44 rounds set by Tim Norris in 1980.
Bulldogs Breaking New Ground
Freshman Nick Watney earned his first top 20 finish in the Morris Williams Invitational tying for 18th with a score of 224. Todd Rose marked his career lowest round at the Fresno Lexus Classic this Fall shooting 66 in the third round (73-70-66--209). Rose has earned six top 20 finishes this season (out of seven tournaments). Ryan King has earned seven top 20 finishes out of seven tournaments (three top five finishes) and Danny Paniccia has earned six top 20 finishes. King leads the active Bulldogs in top 20 finishes in a career with 17.
Fall Dean's List
The 1999 Fall semester Dean's List honors Josh Watney for his academic achievements during the Fall semester. Watney earned All-America Scholar accolades last season as well as WAC Scholar Athlete and Fresno State Scholar Athlete honors.
`Dogs Hosts NCAA West Regional Tournament
Fresno State will host the NCAA West Regional Tournament on May 18-20 at the Riverbend Golf Course. The NCAA West Regional Tournament is considered the preliminary tournament for the NCAA Championship Tournament and fields 27 qualifying teams and six qualifying individuals from both district 7 and district 8 as well as at-large qualifiers. The NCAA regional breakdown is as follows:
District 7 6 Teams, 2 Individuals
District 8 12 Teams, 1 Individual
At-Large 9 Teams from national pool, 3 individuals
A single 18-hole practice round will be conducted at the Riverbend Golf Course on Wednesday, May 17 beginning at 8 a.m. Competition is scheduled to begin at 7:12 a.m., Thursday, May 18. The top nine teams finishing at the NCAA West Regionals advance to the finals in Auburn/Opelika, Ala. NCAA West Regional Media Credentials
All requests for media credentials must be put in writing and can be faxed to the Fresno State Athletic Media Relations Office at (559) 278-4689. Credentials shall be assigned to accredited members of the media only and requests should include the media outlet represented. All requests need to be made a minimum of two weeks in advance.
Media Center and Post-Competition Results
A media center and interview room will be located at the Riverbend Clubhouse. All competition results will be posted and issued at this site. There will be copying, faxing, phone and internet services available to credentialed members of the media. Results will be compiled using the official Golfstat scoring software. Copies of each day's results will be provided to each head coach and media representative. The daily results will not provided for spectators and individual players. There will be a condensed version with pairings available for players. Daily results will be faxed to each represented school and will also be posted on the faxback system, MediaTeamLink as well as the Fresno State Athletics website www.gobulldogs.com.
