Women's Tennis Defeated in Second Round of NCAA Championships

FRESNO, Calif. -
The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team advanced to next weekend's NCAA Women's Tennis Championships in Malibu with a 5-1 win over No. 39 Fresno State today at Stanford.
Stanford jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind straight set victories in singles before the Bulldogs made their way on the board with No. 41 Kim Niggemeyer (So., Berlin, Germany) tremendous win over No. 1 Marissa Irvin in three sets.
Niggemeyer prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to hand Irvin her first loss in 21 matches this season. Niggemeyer next heads to the NCAA Singles Championships which begin Monday, May 22 at Pepperdine.
Stanford clinched the match at No. 5 singles where Anke Beier (Fr., Velbert, Germany) was defeated by Gabriela Lastra 4-6, 6-0, 6-3.
With this loss the Bulldogs finish the season 16-9 while Stanford improves to 26-0.
