Bulldogs Qualify for NCAA Golf Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs slipped from a third place tie to a sixth place tie after the third and final round, but Fresno State qualified easily for the NCAA Championships held in Auburn, Ala. from May 31-June .3. As a team, the Bulldogs scored 13-under-par finishing 281-279-291--851. Arizona won the West Regional scoring 25-under-par, BYU and UNLV tied for second with scores of 843 apiece, Southern Cal finished in fourth (848) and New Mexico climbed to fifth with 850 (-14).
"We had a little bit of a struggle today even though we had a substantial lead," head coach Mike Watney said. "We were a little tight and in a protective mode. In the long run though it was a great finish and we are headed to nationals."
Individually, three Bulldogs finished in the top 20 to propel Fresno State to the national championships, freshman Nick Watney, the highest Bulldog finisher, finished in a nine-way tie for ninth with a three-day score of 70-68-73--211 (-5). Watney teed off this morning as Fresno State's No. 1 seed for the second time this year. He was in the leader group at the ASU/Thunderbird Savane Invitational where he finished in a tie for 10th.
Seniors Ryan King and Danny Paniccia finished in a six-way tie for 18th with respective scores of 69-72-71--212 and 73-68-71--212 (-4). Senior Todd Rose scored a 69-73-77--219 (+3) finishing in a tie with six opponents for 60th. Senior Josh Watney finished in a tie for 66th with 73-71-76--220 (+4).
