FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head women's tennis coach Corbin Archer has elected to resign from his duties effective at the end of this season, athletics director Al Bohl announced today.
Archer came to Fresno State prior to the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach from the University of Illinois, for which he played on the men's tennis team from 1995-98. After one year as assistant, he was elevated to head coach after Irene Harris left to pursue a doctorate degree. Archer led this year's team to a 16-9 record, a top 30 ranking and to the NCAA tournament, where the Bulldogs defeated Clemson 5-3 before falling to top-seeded Stanford 5-1 in the second round. Under his tutelage, Kim Niggemeyer became an All-American and qualified for the NCAA singles tournament.
"My time at Fresno State was a wonderful experience," said Archer, who plans on enrolling in graduate school at the University of Utah next fall. "The time had come for me to pursue other avenues in my life. But I will always remember fondly the friends I made here and the players I had an opportunity to coach."
A national search will be conducted to determine Archer's successor.
