Women Second, Men Third at WAC Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - The track and field teams performed well at the WAC Outdoor Championships in El Paso, Texas, en route to a second place finish for the women and third for the men. The women scored 135 points, finishing behind Rice. The men's squad was third with 120 points finishing behind SMU (1st) and TCU (2nd).
The women's team was led by sophomore Brooke Lankard and junior April Wiechmann. Lankard won the pole vault crown with a personal-best mark of 12-11 1/2. Wiechmann took first in the discus with a personal-best 149-2. She also placed fourth in the high jump, fourth in the javelin, fifth in the hammer and fifth in the shot put. Junior Erin Boothe was the team's top finisher in the high jump, taking third place, and sophomore Kayla Russum was the top Bulldog in the javelin finishing third with a personal-best 151-10. Junior Jynette Grayson-Reed finished fifth in the finals of the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 54.30. Freshman, Crystal Simmons took third in the finals of the long jump as she posted a personal-best mark of 19-4 3/4.
The men's team got an outstanding performance from senior Jim Davis. Davis broke the WAC-Championship and school-record in the pole vault as he cleared a personal-best height of 19-0 1/4. Davis was honored with the meet's Outstanding Performance award for his tremendous feat. Freshman Josh Roddy placed third in he 1,500 meters with a time of 3:54.69. Sophomore Phillip Ogilvie and senior Tim Padilla finished third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Sophomore Josh Alfaro leaped a personal-best 6-7 in the high jump to take fourth. Freshmen Kevin Carano (54-3 1/4) and Kyle Carano (50-7 1/4) posted their best marks of the season in the triple jump while taking fourth and sixth, respectively.
Head men's coach Red Estes was named the WAC Coach of the Year in his final year of coaching at Fresno State.
