FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Melvin Ely scored 19 points and Tito Maddox added 16 to lead No. 22 Fresno State over Texas-El Paso 108-56 Thursday night for its 13th straight victory.
The victory matched the Fresno State (17-2 overall, 6-0 Western Athletic Conference) record for consecutive wins, established during the 1980-81 season. The victory was the 750th of Jerry Tarkanian's coaching career.
The lopsided loss was the worst in school history for UTEP (15-3, 4-2).
Travis DeManby made his first four three-pointers and finished with 14 for Fresno. Demetrius Porter added 13.
Roy Smallwood and Leonard Owens each scored 11 points for UTEP. Brandon Wolfram was limited to eight points, well below his 23.5 average.
Fresno State built a 23-point halftime lead into a 79-33 advantage with 11 minutes left. Ely had 12 of his points in the first nine minutes of the second half.
Texas-El Paso charged to an 8-2 lead before Fresno State went on a 22-4 run. Porter hit a 3-pointer early in the run but then picked up his second foul less than five minutes into the game.
Reserve Travis DeManby buried three 3-pointers, the last giving the Bulldogs a 24-12 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the half. Texas-El Paso never recovered from that run as Fresno opened up a 46-23 halftime lead.
Maddox, who had nine assists and eight rebounds, had 15 in the half and eight in the final five minutes. Maddox also had a team-high nine assists and pulled down eight rebounds.
