Fresno State claimed the lone doubles point of the match, winning two of the three double matches. The Bulldogs' No. 1 team of juniors Simone Jardim and Kim Niggemeyer defeated Washington's duo of Darija Klaic and Kristina Kraszewski 8-3 and the No. 2 team of senior Liesl Fichtbauer and Courtney Jantz won their match against Ilona Kordonskaya and Claire Carter 8-4.
The Bulldogs and Huskies each won three of the six singles matches. All-American Niggemeyer coasted past No. 78 Washington's Kraszewski 6-2, 6-2 at the No.1 spot. No. 2 Fichtbauer defeated Klaic 6-1, 6-1, and No. 3 Jardim rallied from one set down to outlast Washington's Kordonskaya 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Jardim, a transfer from Auburn, was playing in her first dual match as a Bulldog. The junior won 10 games in a row at one point after a sluggish start in the first set to defeat Kordonskaya, who had been the No. 1 singles player for the Huskies in their previous match against Boise State. Washington claimed victories at the No. 4, 5 and 6 singles spots. Freshman Courtney Jantz, who entered today's match second in singles wins on the team with nine, was dispatched by Washington freshman Erin Hoe 6-2, 6-4. Hoe is ranked No. 43 nationally.
The win was the first victory under new head coach Kevin Epley, who joined the Bulldogs at the start of the season. Epley had previously served as the assistant coach at the University of Arizona.
Fresno State returns to action Sunday when they will square off against No. 62 Washington State (0-0) in Oakland at 12 p.m. The Bulldogs defeated the Cougars 5-3 last season in Fresno and are 8-1 overall against Washington State.
