FRESNO, Calif.- - The Bulldogs traveled to Corvallis, Ore., Saturday and despite a hard-fought meet fell to the Beavers 145-117.
The Bulldogs won four of the 14 events. The `dogs also claimed 22 top three finishes for the day. The loss is only the second dual-meet loss of the season bringing their overall record to 9-2.
As usual the relay teams proved to be a point of strength for the Bulldogs. The 200 medley relay team of Summir Case (Foothill Ranch, Calif.), Greer McGettrick (Studio City, Calif.), Laurel Frisinger (Napa, Calif.) and Jesie Lewis (Juneau, Ala.) took second in the first event of the day. The Bulldogs would close out the day in the same fashion with the 200 freestyle relay team of Lena Darnell (Spring Valley, Calif.), Summir Case, Chandra Riberich (La Crosse, Wis.) and Jesie Lewis again claiming second.
Standing strong in her role as a leader of this year's team, senior Jesie Lewis won both of the events that she competed in. Lewis claimed victory in the 50 Free (:24.34) and 100 free (:53.17). Fellow senior Summir Case also made a strong impact for the `Dogs winning the 100 back (:58.05) and taking second in the 200 back (2:08.66)
Freshman Julian Hill (Bakersfield, Calif.) continues to make a strong showing for her first season. Taking first in the 200 back (2:08.34) and second in the 100 back (:59.66). Also turning in strong performances were Jennifer Brown (West Hills, Calif.), who took second in both the 1650 free (17:28.96) and 500 free (5:07.74) and Temple Cowden (Redlands, Calif.) who claimed second place in the 200 free (1:58.49) and 400 IM (4:33.75) and a third place in the 200 fly (2:09.66).
"I am very proud of this team who represented Fresno State incredibly well," head coach Daniella Irle said. "We had some bad luck with illnesses, but that is no excuse. These swimmers pushed themselves very hard but just could not overcome the very strong Oregon State team. These athletes have a lot of character, and this loss will simple serve to get them a little angry and fire them up for that home meet against San Jose State. Losses are always tough, but this was a good one. We were tested by circumstances and a strong team and these swimmers showed that they are incredible athletes."
The Bulldogs will come home this week for their final home meet of the season. The meet will cap off the season as they face off against the Spartans from San Jose State. The Spartans pulled an upset against the `Dogs last season and with the loss to the Beavers, the Bulldogs will be in a fighting mood come Saturday, Feb. 3. The meet will be held at the Central Unified Aquatics Complex and begins at 1 p.m.
