FRESNO, Calif. - Omelogo Udeze had the biggest game of her Fresno State career to help lead the Bulldogs past UTEP 75-69 at the North Gym. The win moves FS's record to 5-9 (1-1 WAC) while the Miners drop to 5-9 (1-2 WAC).
Udeze was simply magnificent in the first half, scoring 20 points and pulling down seven boards. The sophomore finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds, both career highs. She played 39 minutes, also a career high.
Despite Udeze's stellar play, UTEP was to stay within striking distance for nearly the entire game. After holding an 11-point edge at one point, the Bulldogs settled for a 45-37 lead going into halftime. The 45 points was the most FS has scored in a half this season.
Fresno State was able to keep UTEP at bay for a large majority of the second half. The Bulldogs took a 63-52 lead with 6:49 to go when Tiffany Simon hit a short jumper. But that's when the Miners started to chip into the FS advantage. UTEP whittled the lead down to 68-65 with 2:32 on two Katie Pyle free throws. After Simon hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it 69-65, Amy Pack scored on a put-back to bring UTEP within two points with 1:56 left.
However, back-to-back baskets by Lindsay Logan and Simon increased the edge to six with one minute to go. With 42 seconds to play and FS clinging to a 73-69 lead, the Bulldogs had possession of the ball. Inexplicably, the Miners did not attempt to foul, and FS was able to run the clock under 10 seconds, giving the Bulldogs a victory.
In addition to Udeze's performance, Logan was once again outstanding. For the 14th time in 14 games, the sophomore scored in double figures, this game tallying 19 to go along with her seven assists. Simon also added 16. Fresno State's 75 points was the most it has scored in a game this season.
Last year's WAC freshman of the year Amy Pack gave the Miners 29 points and 12 rebounds despite playing most of the game in foul trouble. Pyle added 14 while Christina Mata had 13.
Next for Fresno State is SMU, which the Bulldogs will play Friday at 5 p.m. PST in Dallas.
