Golf Wins at Pacific

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State golf team finished the third round of play today at the Pacific Invitational. It was at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Califoria.
There were 30 miles a hour winds in Stockton today. The weather conditions made play difficult. Scores went up dramatically in the last round.
"Due to the poor conditions, we lost the lead," but regained it with great play at the end," said Head Coach Mike Watney.
The Bulldogs won the event with a score of 281-289-299-869. Nevada came in second with a score of 285-286-301-872. The Bulldogs were the only team at the tournament to shoot under 300 in the final round.
"I was suprised at the results from this tournament," said Watney.
Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) was the only player to place third in the tournament. His final score was 68-71-74-213 (-3). He had 16 pars and 2 bogies.
The only player who shot under par in the final round of play was Fresno State's Jonathan Echols.He shot a 71.
Senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) and Sophomore Chad Spencer (Rocklin, Calif.) placed 13th in the tournament. Echols had a final score of 72-76-71-219 (+3). Spencer's final score was 70-72-77-219 (+3).
Junior Nick Watney (Dixion, Calif.) finished 29th in the tournament. His final score was 71-75-77-223 (+7). Freshman Ian Nelson finished 48th in the tournament. His final score was 77-71-80-228 (+12).
The winner of the 15-team tournament was Pacific's Troy McKinley. He shot 69-69-73-211 (-5). Second place went to Cullen Brasford of Nevada who shot 67-72-73-212 ( -4).
The 'Dogs will be traveling to the Bakersfield Invitational on October 29-30, 2001. The team will play at the Stockdale Country Club.
