Fresno-Calif. -
The Fresno Lexus Golf Classic finished Sunday at Sunnyside Country Club.
The Bulldogs won the tournament with a team total of 834. This was 40 strokes higher
than the second place teams. Stanford, UOP, and Nevada all tied for second place.
Golf Head Coach Mike Watney couldn't believe the commanding lead taken by the 'Dogs.
"I've never seen that major of a victory before," said Coach Watney.
This win was a team effort as Nick Watney, Jonathan Echols, and Chad Spencer finished
in the top four places.
Nick Watney proved victorious in the Classic. He won the tournament with a score of
203. He finished today's final round with a 69 (-3).
"This means a lot," said Watney. "I was very nervous in the first round. I thought since
last year how nice it would be to win in a home tournament."
Jonathan Echoles also had a great round of golf today. He shot a 67 and finished with a
tournament total of 203. Echoles took the second place position.
Chad Spencer rounded out the top four and shot a 71 today. His total score was 213.
"Our poster says that we have a one-two punch with team support," said Coach Watney.
"Usually you need team support to eek out a victory."
The last Bulldog to win the Classic was Dana Booth in 1977 with a score of 216. The last
Fresno State team win was in 1994.
The highest score at Sunnyside in the Classic is by Sam Randolph who shot a 200.
