Equestrian Team Hosts Varsity Tournament

The equestrian team is hosting an English/Western show
this weekend at the Student Horse Center. The English
portion of the show started at 12:30 p.m. today. The
English riders competed in 11 events today. There will
be eight Western events tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m.
Bakersfield, Cal Poly, Stanford, UC Davis, UC Santa
Cruz, Nevada and Fresno State all participated in the
show.
The finishes were very close today as Fresno State
tied with Cal Poly with 27 points. Nevada was the
Reserve champion with 26 points.
"I was very pleased with today's results," head coach Megan McGee said.
"To see so many so many rookie riders do well was very encouraging."
The team accumulates points all season long in order
to participate in the Region I Finals in March. Fresno
State leads the Miller's Cup with 157 points so far
this season. The Bulldogs are 25 points ahead of Cal
Poly who is second place with 132 points.
Fresno State rider Michaela Mathis (Lemoore, Calif.)
won the event with 14 points. Two riders tied for the
Reserve Champion title. Fresno State rider Katey
Feeley (Goleta, Calif.) and Laura Dietz of Cal Poly
both finished with 11 points.
This second place finish puts Feeley just three
points away from qualifying in the Open Flat event.
She needs 28 points to attend the Region I Finals. Feeley
also has 31 of the 35 points needed to qualify for the
Intermediate Over Fences Event.
Many more Bulldogs are just a few points away from
qualifying for the Region I Finals. Mathis is just two
points away from qualifying in the Intermediate Flat.
Christa Brown (Agoura Hills, Calif.) has 33 of the 35
points needed to qualify for the Walk-Trot-Canter
event. Amanda Smith is three points away from
qualifying for the Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter event.
