BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) - Joe Shipp scored a career high 31 points and broke a school record with nine 3-pointers, as California beat Fresno State 97-75 Tuesday.
In the teams' fifth meeting ever, Shipp broke the old record of seven 3-pointers shared by several Bears, the last being Jason Kidd in 1994.
Jamal Sampson scored 15 points, Brian Wethers 14 and Shantay Legans 12 for the Bears (6-1), who won their 16th straight nonconference home game by drilling 14 of 28 3-pointers (50 percent) and setting a season high for points.
The Bulldogs (7-4) lost their third straight despite 21 points by Chris Jeffries, 15 from Hiram Fuller and 14 by Noel Felix.
Cal's 16-0 run late in the first half capped on Shipp's sixth 3-pointer to go up 40-25. Shipp had 22 by halftime as the Bears raced to a 52-32 lead.
Fresno State's leading scorer and rebounder Melvin Ely, the 2001 WAC Player of the Year, sat out his fourth game pending an NCAA inquiry into allegations he received improper benefits. The teams had split their previous meetings.
