POWAY, Calif. - No. 9 Fresno State had to wait one full weekend before opening its 2001 season and the Bulldogs jumped out quickly in their 8-0 (6 inn.) mercy-run rule game victory over Iowa State at the 11th Annual Campbell/Cartier Tournament.
The Bulldogs, who totaled eight runs on six hits and committed an error, stimied the Cyclones who had five hits and also committed an error.
Freshman RHP/UT Jamie Southern picked up her first collegiate win in her first start with a shutout victory after scattering five hits and striking out nine. At the plate, Southern provided a big part of the Bulldogs' offense after going 2-3 with three RBI.
Fresno State opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning as Southern doubled to right center to score Becky Witt and Vanessa Czarnecki. In the fourth inning, the Bulldogs exploded for five runs as they batted completely around. Alicia Dowland led the inning off with a double to left field. With one out, Pam Perez walked and Dowland advanced to third on the wild pitch and Perez to second. Another wild pitch allowed Dowland to score before Becky Witt walked. Vanessa Czarnecki had an infield single to third base. Tiffany Whipple then followed with a walk and picked up a RBI as Perez crossed home plate. As the fourth Bulldog to be hit by a pitch, Lindsay Fossatti picked up a RBI as Witt scored. With Iowa State making a pitching change, Southern answered with a RBI single to right field to bring in Czarnecki. Lori Hoffman, as the designated player, then hit a sacrifice fly to allow Whipple to score the fifth run of the inning.
In the sixth, Fresno State notched its eighth run on Dowland's two-out RBI single to left field to score pinch runner Michelle Wright from second base.
Dowland was the other multiple hit leader for the 'Dogs after going 2-4 with a run and a RBI.
Fresno State meets tournament host San Diego State this evening at 6:00 p.m.
