FRESNO, Calif. -- The No. 20 ranked Fresno State men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat to No. 23 USC Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles.
The loss is the first of the season for the Bulldogs (2-1), while USC improves to 7-1. Fresno State was attempting to avenge last year's season-ending 4-1 loss to USC in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
USC swept all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. In singles play, the Trojans came away with victories at the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 spots of the lineup. Senior Peter Luczak outlasted Andrew Park of USC 6-4, 1-6, 8-6 at the No. 1 singles spot. Luczak, 3-0 so far in dual match play, needs only 21 victories to break the all-time Fresno State singles mark of 105 held by Bryan Juinio. The other singles win for the Bulldogs came at the No. 6 spot, where freshman Alex Menichini picked up his third win of the spring season defeating Parker Collins of USC 6-4, 6-1.
The Bulldogs will host UC Irvine at 1 p.m. on Saturday and then square off against No. 9 Texas at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
