Wrestlers Head to Wyoming for West Regional Championship

Fresno State to West Regional Wrestling Championships
The 16th ranked Bulldogs will travel to Wyoming for the 2001 NCAA West Regional Wrestling Championships. Other teams participating in the tournament are Air Force, Eastern Illinois, Marquette, Northern Iowa and Wyoming.
Fresno State Boasts 13-6 record after winning three on the road
The Bulldogs won their last three dual meets against No. 18 Boise State, Wyoming and Air Force to boost their record to 13-6. The six teams Fresno State lost to are nationally ranked teams. The `Dogs upset two teams in the 2000-01 season including a 21-14 win over No. 14 Oregon and a 18-17 win over No. 15 Oregon State.
No. 18 Boise State Falls to Fresno State
The Broncos lost to the `Dogs in the last match of the meet as Eddie Gifford beat Casey Eager 11-4, lifting the Bulldogs to a 21-19 victory. Fresno State won the first four of five matches, then lost four in a row before Gifford's meet deciding win. Mike Mellor got a major decision over Jon Terry in the 174 division, Jason Rossotti won by forfeit in the 184 division, Billy Blunt beat Bart Johnson by a 4-3 decision and Stephen Abas beat Ben Vombaur by technical fall in 7 minutes.
Bulldogs Wipe Out Wyoming
Fresno State allowed only two Wyoming wins as the `Dogs cruised to a 31-7 victory. Nathan Vasquez got the Bulldogs off to a good start, beating Wyoming's Levi Prevost by a 17-9 major decision in the 157 division. Eddie Gifford got another win for the `Dogs as he beat Justin Christenson 7-5 in the 165 division and Jason Rossotti beat Kevin Kessner in the 184 division. Billy Blunt pinned Brad Steele in 55 seconds at the heavyweight division and Stephen Abas pinned John Faczak in 1 minute and 34 seconds in the 125 division. Ben Martinez, Ralph Lopez and Jim Medeiros got wins by decision in the 133, 141 and 149 divisions.
Fresno State Wins Last Dual Meet
The Bulldogs won seven and gave up three matches against the Air Force, beating the Falcons 25-9 on Saturday, Feb. 17. Fresno State jumped to a 5-0 lead when Stephen Abas got a technical fall over Heath McKim. Other Bulldogs to earn victories were Ralph Lopez (141), Jim Medeiros (149), Nathan Vasquez (157), Jason Rossotti (184), Tom Gohde (197) and Billy Blunt (Hwt).
