FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State rallied back after an early lead by San Jose State to come within five points of the Spartans, but could not overcome them and lost the meet 164-130.
The Bulldogs won five of the sixteen events and claimed 25 top-three finishes. The Spartans took the lead early and held it throughout the meet, despite a fierce comeback attempt by the `Dogs. After eight events the Spartans were up 84-63. Two events later, the Bulldogs had closed the gap to 95-90, but that would be as close as the got.
In her final home meet of her career, senior Summir Case (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) claimed two first place finishes. Case took first in the 100 backstroke (:57.99) and the 200 backstroke (2:06.04). Junior powerhouse Jesie Lewis (Juneau, Ala.) also claimed two championship swims in the 50 (:24.33) and 100 (:53.06) freestyle events.
Lewis and Case were both members of the winning 400 free relay team and second place finishing 200 medley relay team. They were accompanied by senior Lena Darnell (Spring Valley, Calif.) and freshman Krsti Collins (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) on the 400 free relay team. Senior Laurel Frisinger (Napa, Calif.) and freshman Greer McGettrick (Studio City, Calif.) helped to complete the 200 medley relay team.
"It was a very tough day for us," head coach Daniella Irle said. "I think that the biggest opponent we faced out there today was ourselves. We are a tough team, filled with great talent, but we beat ourselves more than anything today. There can be no excuses, and we just kept looking for excuses.
The Bulldogs finish the season with a 9-3 dual meet record. Fresno State will travel to the WAC Championships on Feb. 22-24. The Bulldogs have posted a 1-1 record against WAC opponents this season defeating Nevada for the first time and taking today's loss from San Jose State.
