LOS ANGELES - No. 11 Fresno State (23-10, 2-0 WAC) completed its doubleheader sweep over Loyola Marymount (19-13, 0-4 WAC) with a 4-1 road victory in the nightcap.
Fresno State quickly put two runs on the board in the top of the first as it sent seven batters to the plate. Senior center fielder Becky Witt grounded out to the shortstop to start the game. Junior left fielder Tiffany Whipple reached safely on an infield single that shot off the third baseman's glove and nearly ricocheted into left field. Freshman left-hander Lori Hoffman picked up her second RBI on the day with a double to left center that scored Whipple. Junior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti roped a single into left field to put runners on the corners. Senior shortstop Alicia Dowland reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases. Sophomore catcher Pam West reached base on a fielder's choice to advance all the runners but Hoffman was thrown out at home. Freshman second baseman Pam Perez, on a 3-1 count, walked and collected a RBI as Fossatti scored.
In the bottom of the third, Loyola Marymount picked up a run on two outs. The Lions put runners on first and second before third baseman Sami Strinz connected for a RBI single up the middle for LMU's lone run.
Fresno State responded with two more runs in the top of the fourth. With one out, junior first baseman Vanessa Czarnecki reached on an error by the LMU shortstop before Witt grounded out to Strinz. Advancing to second base on Witt's at bat, Czarnecki went to third on Whipple's infield hit to the pitcher. Hoffman then reached base on a dropped fly by the left fielder that allowed Czarnecki to score and Whipple to advance to third base. Fossatti then reached base on a dropped fly by the pitcher and allowed Whipple to score.
Getting her second start on the day, Hoffman picked up her seventh win and improved to 2-0 in WAC action. Hoffman gave up five hits, one run and walked one.
Whipple (3-4, two runs) and Fossatti (2-4, run) had multiple-hit performances for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State will be back in action next Tuesday, March 27, for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against No. 8 CS Fullerton. The Bulldogs will host UC Riverside on Sunday, April 1, 1:00 p.m. to close out a brief four-game homestand.
