Golf Holds 10th in Texas

FRENSO, Calif. - Fresno State currently stands in 10th after the first two rounds of the Morris Williams Invitational held at the Austin Country Club in Austin, Texas.
After winning the University of San Diego tournament last week, sophomore Nick Watney again leads the `Dogs. Watney stands in a T5th place after shooting 71-70-141. Watney is the only Bulldog to have experience playing on the 6,906 yard-par 72 course, placing in the top-20 for the first time on this course last year.
The only other Bulldog in the top 25 is freshman Brandon Coats. Coats shot 74-73-147 today placing him T25. Following Coats, stands junior Jonathon Echols. Echols' first-round score of 71 placed him in a tie for 8th place, but he fell off in round two scoring 80 for 151 on the day.
Fellow junior Dustin Smith showed improvement in round two. Smith shot a 79 in round 1 and then shaved off a couple of strokes to 77 finishing at 156 and T73. In only his third tournament of the season, sophomore Daniel Timmons shot 88-80-168 to finish 82nd for the day.
Leading the tournament with 573 is Georgia Tech. Following close behind is Oklahoma State with 574 and Oklahoma in third at 576. District seven teams UNLV and New Mexico both stand ahead of Fresno State. UNLV is at sixth place with 583 and New Mexico is at T7th with 588. Fellow WAC school SMU is at ninth with 589.
The two-day tournament will conclude tomorrow, Tuesday, March 27. after round three. First tee-off is at 8 a.m.
