FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldogs continued to play strong despite bad weather at the Cleveland Golf Classic held
Having to cancel round three due to the weather, play concluded after round two today. The Bulldogs moved up to fifth from their sixth place position at the conclusion of play yesterday. The `Dog's finished at 600, in a three-way tie with Minnesota and USC, the tournament host. For the second week the Bulldogs were able to defeat the District 7 teams, including the one that eluded them at Hawaii, New Mexico. New Mexico finished at 601 and BYU finished at 611.
Individually, Sophomore Daniel Timmons led the Bulldogs finishing T18 after shooting a career low of 69. Timmons was a last minute substitute for junior Jonathon Echols who had to skip the tournament for personal reasons. Also shooting a two-day total of 148, sophomore Nick Watney tied in 18th as well, after shooting 70 today. The placing now gives Watney six straight top-20 finishes. Freshman Brandon Coats finished in 27th with a two-day total of 150 after shooting 78 today. Junior Dustin Smith tied for 47th shooting 79 today and senior Wes Lovell finished tied 75th after shooting 82 for a total of 161.
"I think we did an incredible job this week," head coach Mike Watney said. "I never thought that we would be able to beat both BYU and New Mexico, especially with the weather we were in. These guys did a great job. We have showed a lot in the last two weeks. I know we have a lot of the District 7 teams shaking their heads. They thought they finally had us, but Fresno State always roars back in the spring."
The Bulldog will return to Southern California on Monday, Mar. 19 to compete in the University of San Diego Invitational. The tournament will be held at Shadow Ridge Country Club in San Diego, Calif. Hopefully, Mother Nature will be a little more agreeable that time.
