#7 Softball Drops First Game in Own Tournament

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 7 Fresno State softball tried for its second come from behind win in as many days but New Mexico State would stave off a Bulldog comeback for a 5-4 victory in the Hedrick's Hallowell Chevrolet Classic.
Fresno State took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third with a RBI double by Tiffany Whipple and Whipple would eventually score on an error by the Aggie's shortstop.
In the bottom of the frame, New Mexico State answered back with five runs on four hits and was aided by two Bulldog errors for a 5-2 lead. All five runs were unearned.
Fresno State, which left 11 runners on base to NMSU's two, threatened in the top of the fifth but stranded three. The Bulldogs then added two runs in the top of the sixth as Whipple knocked in two more runs.
The Bulldogs, however, could not get the tying run across and dropped its first game of the tournament and suffered their first home loss to the Aggies. In addition, it was New Mexico State's first win in 13 tries against the Bulldogs.
Fresno State (11-3), which tallied four runs on seven hits and had two errors, started with right-hander Lindsay Foster. Foster was pulled after 2.1 innings in favor of right-hander Leslie Poole. Foster took the loss.
New Mexico State (10-20), which earlier defeated Colorado State 3-2 in nine innings before meeting Fresno State, scored five runs on six hits while committing four errors.
