FRESNO, Calif. - #13 Fresno State could not push across the equalizing run against UC Riverside and the Highlanders came away with a 3-2 victory at Bulldog Diamond
UC Riverside attacked quickly and swiftly after putting up three runs on four hits in the top of the first inning.
With the Bulldogs' starting pitcher Lori Hoffman in the circle, Hoffman got the first Highlander batter to ground out before the next three connected with singles. Then came the blow dealt by first baseman Sarah Ditrich who delivered with a two-out three RBI double that squirted up the middle and pass the center fielder for a 3-0 lead.
Fresno State, which outhit UCR 9-7, scored two runs of its own in the bottom of the second. After third baseman Lindsay Fossatti singled down the left field line, shortstop Alicia Dowland walked and second baseman Pam Perez got an infield single, the bases were loaded with no outs. Catcher Pam West lined a two RBI single into left center to score Fossatti and Dowland. With Perez advancing to third and West going to second on the throw home, UC Riverside starting pitcher Monique Baeza got right fielder Mitzi Ing to pop up to the catcher in foul territory and first baseman Vanessa Czarnecki to ground out to second base to end the inning as quickly as it started.
Fresno State also would strand runners at second and third in the fifth and seventh innings.
