FRESNO, Calif. - Who says no one ever wins in Las Vegas?
No. 8 Fresno State received solid singles play from the bottom of their lineup Wednesday afternoon, defeating No. 65 UNLV 4-3 on the Rebels' Senior Day at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.
The Bulldogs improved their stellar spring record to 14-3, while UNLV fell to 7-11 overall and closed out its 2001 home season with a 3-10 mark.
Fresno State received wins at the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles spots, along with senior No. 36 Liesl Fichtbauer at No. 2, and won four of the six singles matches en route to the match victory. The Rebels began the day by winning two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 match lead.
Junior Chantel Wiggins returned to the lineup in fine fashion, defeating UNLV's Urska Radanovic 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Kelly Ramirez won for the fourth time in five matches, scoring a 6-3, 6-2 win over Britta Gabl at the No. 5 spot. Freshman Courtney Jantz won her third match in a row with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the Rebel's Amy Hadziosmanic at No. 6 singles. The Bulldog's clutch singles play was especially important on this day, as Fresno State was playing without Simone Jardim, who is third on the team in wins with an 11-5 (17-8 overall) dual-match record.
This was only the fifth time that Fresno State received wins from the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles spots in the same match this season.
Fresno State's next match is Friday afternoon, when the Bulldogs square off against Utah in Salt Lake City.
