FRESNO, Calif. - No. 8 Fresno State women's tennis swept all three matches to claim the doubles point and a 4-3 victory against No. 36 BYU in Provo, Utah on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 16-3 on the season with their fourth straight victory, while the Cougars drop to 12-8 with the loss.
All three doubles matches were closely contested, but Fresno State came out on top in all three matches to win the point. The No. 1 doubles team of Kim Niggemeyer and Simone Jardim, ranked No. 7 nationally, won their first match together since Mar. 26 in a 9-7 win over BYU's Jodi Richardson and Brooke Ferney. The duo is 19-3 overall and 14-2 in dual-match action. The Nos. 2 and 3 Bulldog doubles teams each tallied 8-6 triumphs over their respective opponents.
Singles competition was a split, with each school collecting three singles victories. BYU went ahead in the match by winning at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots to take a 2-1 lead, but the Bulldogs won the next three to ensure the win. Fresno State's senior (No.36) Liesl Fichtbauer continued her strong season, defeating Lu Oswald 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot for her 14th straight win. All-American junior (No. 31) Kim Niggmeyer notched her 20th overall win of the season with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 spot. Freshman Courtney Jantz recorded the third Bulldog win with a 6-1, 6-0 rout at No. 6 singles.
Fresno State will host Nevada on Sat., Apr. 21 at 9 a.m. in their next match, before closing out the regular season the following day against Pacific.
