FRESNO, Calif. - In their final match of the regular season, the Fresno State men's tennis team made short work of Pacific, defeating the Tigers 7-0 at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The win improves the Bulldogs' record to 15-7 while Pacific drops to 10-10.
"I think this match is a good indication of where our team is at right now," head coach Michael Hegarty said. "Pacific is a team that received an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament last year, but as a group we executed well, and we ended up picking up a victory. All of our guys are playing well, which is just what you want heading into the conference tournament."
The tenor of the match was set immediately, when Alex Krohn and Alex Menichini needed only a matter of minutes to dispose of Gernot Kerschbaumer and Neil Kadota 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. The 13th-ranked duo of Peter Luczak and David Mullins also won with ease, taking out Tobias Abrahamsson and Alexander Fiedler 8-3. Also posting a victory were 32nd-ranked Nick Fustar and Sean Cooper, who defeated Maxime Lacroix and Claes Lindholm 8-3.
In singles, the Bulldogs were dominant, dropping only 21 games in the six matches. Leading the way was Krohn, who posted one of the more impressive days by a Bulldog in recent memory. In addition to winning his doubles match 8-0, the freshman blanked Neil Kadota 6-0, 6-0. Not long after Krohn's win, Menichini streaked past Greg Rietsch 6-0, 6-4, giving FS a 3-0 lead.
Luczak followed with his 104th career singles victory, a 6-2, 6-3 win over Claes Lindholm. The win moved the 13th-ranked Luczak to an incredible 22-0 this year, with all of his matches having been played at No. 1 singles. The senior is only two wins shy of breaking the all-time singles victory mark, currently held by Bryan Juinio (1992-96).
Mullins and Cooper added straight set victories at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, to give Fresno State a 6-0 lead. Nick Fustar closed the match out by peppering winner after winner from the baseline en route to a 7-5, 6-0 win over Abrahamsson.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the WAC championships, to be held at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. Fresno State's seeding and first round opponent will be announced Tuesday.
