Golf Tops District 7 Teams in Santa Cruz

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State finished in a tie for 10th place with the lowest score of all District 7 teams in the 55th annual Western Intercollegiate hosted at the Pasatiempo Golf Club (par 70, 6,483 yards) by San Jose State this week.
The Bulldogs finished tied with host San Jose State at 885 after the third round Tuesday. Hawai'i scored 891, San Diego State finished at 896 and Nevada scored 899, putting the `Dogs at the top of the District 7 finishes. Oregon won the tournament with 850 and Washington following at a distant 867.
Individually Lars Johansson from San Diego State tied with Bullard High School graduate Jason Higton from Pacific at 206 for the title. Sophomore Daniel Timmons continued to be the top scorer for the Bulldogs finishing at T17th shooting 69-70-79-218.
For the first time this season, sophomore Nick Watney finished outside of the top-20. Watney finished had a comeback final round 69 to finish 22nd with 219. Watney is currently the Golfstat Cup fifth ranked individual nationally.
Junior Dustin Smith finished at 40th place after scoring 78-74-71-213 with fellow junior Jonathon Echols taking 74th place, shooting 85-74-74-233. Finishing off the Bulldog lineup was freshman Brandon Coats placing 81st after shooting 77-80-81-238.
The Bulldogs have only two tournaments left of the regular season before the WAC Championships on April 30-May 2. Next for the `Dogs will be a road trip to Tempe, Arizona to compete in the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational on April 13-14.
