FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Nick Watney was named the Western Athletic Conference's men's golf player of the year on Thursday. Watney was also selected toe the first team all-WAC, the only Bulldog selected for the honor.
The league's head coaches selected the all-WAC teams and player, freshman and coach of the year honorees by a vote.
Watney has been the WAC's highest rated golfer for most of the season and finished seventh at the WAC championship. Watney has been named as both WAC, and Golfweek Magazine's National, Player of the Week. Watney scored a school record 200 at the University of San Diego tournament in March and scored his first win of the season at the Inverness Collegiate in the fall. Watney has been ranked as high as fifth in the Golfstat rankings and is currently ranked 12th in the nation. In 31 rounds, he boasts a 71.16 average.
This is the second year for Watney to claim top WAC honors. He was selected to the first team all-WAC last year as well as being named WAC Freshman of the Year last year. Watney now waits his fate with his fellow Bulldogs for the post-season when the NCAA announces the championship participants Tuesday, May 8.
