FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State junior golfer Nick Watney advanced to the second round of the United States Amateur Golf Championship with a first round win over Cameron Yancey of Blackstone, Va., today 4 and 2.
Watney is now among the final 32 players remaining in the tournament and will play Nicholas Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., at 8:30 a.m. EDT Thursday. If he wins, Watney will advance to a quarterfinal match play on Thursday afternoon. The U.S Amateur will be televised live on ESPN Thursday beginning at 11 a.m. PDT.
Watney finished the qualifying stroke play portion of the tournament at six-under par 136 on the Druid Hills Golf Club.
This is the second consecutive year that Watney, the 2001 WAC Player of the Year, reached the round of 32. The championship continues through Sunday's 36-hole final, with the winner earning invitations to play in the next U.S. Open, Masters and British Open.
The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
