Golf Season Starts September 4th
The 2001-2002 golf season has officially started. A combination of veteran and rookie players have made this year's golf team one ready battle. Coach Mike Watney said the team is playing better now than they did at this time last year. He attributes this to the players having another year of experience under their belt. Watney added that the talent of the new players has also raised the level of the team.
Inverness is September 17-18
The Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational will be held at the Inverness Club in Toledo, OH. There will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start for the 36 holes played Monday, September 17. Only 18 holes will be played on Tuesday, September 18 starting at 8:30 a.m. Players will start at one and ten on Tuesday.
Coach Watney on the Inverness
Being 7,255 yards long, the par 71 course is difficult. This however, will be an advantage for Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) since he is a superior ball-striker. Jonathan Echoles (Hanford, Calif.) and Dustin Smith (Crescent, Calif.) are also expected to play.
The Inverness Club is Home to History
The Inverness has been home to the PGA and most noticeable for the time that Bob Tway beat Greg Norman by one stoke by hitting a ball from the bunker.
Golfers Score Aces the Classroom
The 2000-2001 Men's golf team received several honors in the classroom. Dustin Smith (Crescent, Calif.) earned WAC All-Academic Honors. Also, Eric Witherall (Carlsbad, Calif.) made the Dean's List.
Nick Watney Earns Season MVP
The 2000-2001 season ends with many team awards. Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) earned MVP, 2nd team All- American, and holds the All-Time Fresno State season scoring record. Watney also received the team's Most Improved award.
