The Fresno State volleyball team jumped out to a commanding 30-14 win in game one against Northern Arizona but four points here, five points there and three points here allowed the Lumberjacks to steal a four-game win (14-30, 30-26, 30-25, 30-27) from the Bulldogs in the tournament finale of the Howdy's Pepperdine Classic.
Fresno State (0-3) outhit, outblocked and outserved NAU but errors, especially critical now that rally scoring is being utilized, did the Bulldogs in. The Bulldogs were led offensively by sophomore middle blocker Carrie Hartt who had a team-high 11 kills while hitting .471 (11-3-17) and adding four blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Kara Verwey, who was selected to the Howdy's Pepperdine Classic all-tournament team, added 10 kills and six digs. Freshman outside hitter Kristen Fenton and junior outside hitter Christy Burnett each had 13 digs while freshman defensive specialist Tina Brennan chipped in with 11. Junior middle blocker Java Johnson came off the bench to post a match-high nine total blocks (two block solos and seven block assists).
