FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State dominated its opponent in Western Athletic Conference play for the second straight time as the Bulldogs swept Tulsa (30-18, 30-21, 30-16) to improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in league action at the North Gym.
The Bulldogs held Tulsa (3-5, 0-2 WAC) below .100 all night as the Golden Hurricane hit negative in the final two games to post a -.024 hitting percentage. Fresno State had a few too many errors but the 'Dogs finished with a .195 hitting percentage.
Tulsa, which ranked second in the WAC in digs, was outdug by the Bulldogs (53-38) and came up short at the net as it was outblocked, 15-1, by Fresno State.
Senior middle blocker Shauna McQuaid, junior outside hitter Christy Burnett and junior middle blocker Java Johnson provided the majority of the offense. Both McQuaid and Burnett shared match-high honors in kills with 13 a piece while Johnson added nine. Burnett, however, collected her third straight double-double as she led all players in digs (11) while tallying 13 kills.
Every Bulldog who played, except the two defensive specialists, celebrated with their own block party. McQuaid tallied a team-high eight blocks while sophomore outside hitter Kara Verwey chipped in five. Freshman setter Whitney Arena had three total blocks, including a season-high two block solos. Burnett and Johnson also chipped in three blocks. While junior defensive specialist Heather Farr and freshman defensive specialist Tina Brennan could not enjoy the party at the tape, they combined for three of the team's five service aces.
"We are playing some good volleyball," said head coach Lindy Vivas, who is three wins shy of collecting her 200th win at Fresno State. "Our goal was to come out stronger and be sharper, especially in game three. Our middles, Shauna [McQuaid] and Java [Johnson] were very effective. I thought Tina [Brennan] came in a did a very nice job in the back row and serving tonight. Christy [Burnett] had another solid and consistent night."
Fresno State will host UTEP in WAC action this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. in the North Gym. The time was origninally slated for 1:00 p.m. but was moved up one hour in mid-July.
